10RW: You Should Root For Pittsburgh
By Jim Shearer on 01/30/2009
Filed under: 10RW (10 Reasons Why)Another Super Bowl blog posting? Sorry, but on the Friday before Super Bowl Sunday my typing fingers or my mind won't let me concentrate on anything else besides the Pittsburgh Steelers. (left: Don't know who to root for in the Super Bowl yet? Let me sell you on Pittsburgh.) Spend anytime in this fine city and you'll quickly learn why we're all like this. It might be the only city in America where jocks, grandmothers, hipsters, young kids, old men, couch potatoes, yoga enthusiasts, Catholics, Protestants, and any other oddball character you can throw in there come together for... New American Music Union Day #1 Recap
By Jim Shearer on 08/09/2008
Filed under: LIVEWith three music festivals to chose from this weekend--All Points West (Jersey City, NJ), Virgin Mobile (Baltimore), New American Music Union (Pittsburgh, PA)--I decided to attend the latter, just for the fact that I was heading back to Pittsburgh anyway to compete in a golf/fishing/corn-hole triathlon. I was only able to catch the first night of the New American Music Union Festival, which was the obvious appetizer course (Tiny Masters Of Today, NASA, The Black Keys, and The Roots) for the festival's second day (Bob Dylan, The Raconteurs, Gnarls Barkley, Spoon).... A Random Weekend in Pittsburgh
By Jim Shearer on 08/08/2008
Since the rise and fall of the Rolling Rock Town Fair (which in retrospect was a little ahead of its time), my hometown of Pittsburgh hasn't had much to celebrate when it comes to throwing summer music festivals. This year, however, Pittsburgh snagged one. Though the specifics are a little confusing, I must say, I'm very intrigued. The New American Music Union Festival is taking place at the South Side Works (a newly renovated outdoor lifestyle plaza) in Pittsburgh, PA. For anyone who has ever visited Pittsburgh's South Side, you should know that that's the place to be on... MORE »
Stanley Cup Madness Takes Over My Life
By Jim Shearer on 06/03/2008
Filed under: HODGEPODGEWe're heading towards 3PM and I still haven't posted a blog today. I can explain. I went on a road trip to Detroit, Michigan to catch Game 5 of the Penguins/Red Wings Stanley Cup Finals match-up. For as many people in indie music who cringe at the word "sports," there are just as many who hold the world of sports close to their hearts. Through my travels, I have met many musicians who are surprisingly into baseball, football, soccer, and yes, even professional wrestling (ahem, Hot Chip). Because I know these artists have my back, I don't feel as... MORE »
TALK: Donnie Iris
By Jim Shearer on 05/27/2008
Filed under: TALKIt's a well-known fact that people from Pittsburgh love telling people they're from Pittsburgh (I know, cause I've done it myself). Not only that, but when a Pittsburgh sports team reaches the championship game/series, as the Penguins have done recently by advancing to the Stanley Cup Finals, Pittsburghers will not only boast about their hometown sports team, but will simultaneously tell you why they put French fries on their sandwiches, why they liked their ham "chipped," and declare, without hesitation, that Donnie Iris is the greatest rock and roll performer that ever lived. Girl Talk? Pittsburgh? Taco Bell?
By Jim Shearer on 05/14/2008
I gotta thank Pitchfork Media for the tip-off on this story. Girl Talk (aka Greg Gillis), Pittsburgh's greatest rump-shaking export since Donnie Iris, recently played a hometown show at Mr. Small's and treated the crowd to some free Taco Bell that he had won in a contest. (left: It's a rarity to see Girl Talk NOT shirtless. During his live-set, that t-shirt comes off of him faster than you can say Greg Gillis.) As most of you know, I love Pittsburgh, I'm a big fan of Girl Talk's mash-ups, and I'm not gonna lie to you--Taco Bell is a... MORE »
