1991: The Year Punk Broke

By Brandon Kim on 05/05/2009

I tend to lean more Paul McCartney than J Mascis, but early 90's rock has a special place in my somewhat charred heart. So it was with great joy I went up to the Walter Reade theater in Manhattan last night for a screening of Dave Markey's tour documentary, "1991: The Year Punk Broke." Remember when Nirvana was still new, before they were blasting incessantly from frat house windows across the country? I'd never seen it before, and if it was off my radar, maybe it was off yours too. Set during a tour through Europe with Nirvana and Dinosaur... MORE »

Two Indie Ear mixtapes in one week? You must be thinking this is Christmas, right? Close (especially if you're gauging in terms of Christian holidays with religious significance). MORE »

LISTS: Top 10 Nirvana Moments

Fifteen years ago today, with a suicide note and a shotgun by his side, Kurt Cobain's dead body was found in his Seattle home. A coroner's report suggested that Cobain had taken his life a few days earlier--probably on April 5. At the age of 27 Cobain had musically achieved beyond his wildest dreams (do you think a chain-smoking janitor really thought he'd ever be called the "voice of a generation"?). The Nirvana frontman would have gone on to accomplish more, but how much more, we'll never know. MORE »

Name That CD

With CD's inevitably going the way of the dinosaur, 8-tracks, cassette tapes, Blender Magazine and Crystal Clear Pepsi; CD artwork isn't too far behind. Yes, album covers will always exist--even if they're just reduced to being a piece of clip art on your iPod screen--but what about artwork on the CD itself? MORE »

LISTS: Top 10 Baby Album Covers

By Jim Shearer on 03/25/2009

Last month, when Morrissey released his new album, Years of Refusal--featuring a picture of him toting a toddler under his arm--a few blog postings popped up on the internet recalling other musical artists that have used infant children as cover babies for their album. I also came across this list recently, which features just about everyone you can think of. MORE »

LISTS: The Great & Potentially Great Rock Star Bands

By Jim Shearer on 03/06/2009

Rock Stars--if they're not already--should be placed on the endangered species list. In 2009, we speak of them in the past tense. It has been so long since we've had a Rock Star, we don't even know what a real one is anymore. MORE »

IT'S LIKE THAT: Bands With the Same Name

A couple weeks ago--without much fanfare or explanation--Santogold changed her stage name to Santigold. Turns out the performer Santo Gold filed an injunction last year to keep the name all for himself. I'm not sure if the case went to court, or if Santigold just didn't want to deal with the hassle. Long story short, Santo Gold got his wish and is now the only Santo Gold on the block. (Don't worry, I don't know who he is either.) MORE »

MIXTAPE: Valentine's Day

Like it or not, Valentine's Day is just one day away. Heck, some of you may be celebrating one day early, just cause you couldn't get those dinner reservations in on time for Saturday night. MORE »

Back to the 90's

Every so often my wife reminds me that I'm stuck in the 90's. I'm sure my love for the decade has also seeped through on many of my blog postings--this one is no different. One of my best friends (who I actually met in the 90's) sent me the link to the following 90's mixtape, Radio Friendly Unit Shifter. Besides some crossfades and tickle scratches, there's not a whole of mixtape parlor tricks going on here, nevertheless, the shot selection is near perfect and quite generous (38 tracks). The 90's nostalgia is also heightened with the use of many... MORE »

IFC LIST MONTH: 50 Bands Your Kids Should Know (25-1)

By Jim Shearer on 07/31/2008

←Back to Numbers 26 through 50 25. Buddy Holly Though his career didn't last for long, Buddy Holly left an indelible mark on rock music. For starters, he took something rather nerdy--a pair of black-rimmed glasses--and turned them into a legendary rock and roll accessory. You won't hear any arguments from Donnie Iris, Elvis Costello, or Rivers Cuomo. He also was one of the first artists to get experimental in the studio, introducing overdubbing into his recordings (a technique that uses various vocal takes, simultaneously, to add emphasis to certain parts of a song--which is now a staple in... If you haven't noticed, it's List Month on IFC.com, a brand new list every weekday in July. I wasn't scheduled to make a list today, but I guess I'm so caught up in the madness, I created one anyway. That's right, it's unsanctioned! Think of this as an appetizer for the 50 Bands Your Kids Should Know list which will be posted later this week. For your list viewing pleasure, an idea that randomly came to me last night, here are the 10 Best Logos In the History of Music:... MORE »

IT'S LIKE THAT: Move Over Air Jordan

By Jim Shearer on 05/22/2008

(left: Yes, that's Kurt Cobain in a Converse ad.) Some of you may remember the old Nike commercial where Michael Jordan, from various locations on the court, slam dunks a basketball at will. His small sidekick, Mars Blackman (played by a then relatively unknown Spike Lee), was so impressed with his buddy's incomparable skills, that he came to the only logical conclusion he could think of, "It's gotta be the shoes." Cause c'mon, how could somebody be that good? He must be getting a little help from somewhere else, and that somewhere else is--aha--his Air Jordan sneakers.... MORE »

The Week That Was (and Still Is), April 6-12

By Jim Shearer on 04/11/2008
Filed under: THE WEEK THAT WAS (AND STILL IS)

This week marked the 14th Anniversary of Kurt Cobain's death. The world still awaits the "next" Nirvana. ("Spring is here again, Reproductive glands") Lollapalooza (Aug. 1-3) announced its line-up this week with a trio of headliners that are reminiscent of the fesitval's glory years in the 90's--Radiohead, Rage Against the Machine, Nine Inch Nails. This week the organizers of Coachella announced that Prince will be headlining the final day of the festival, which will be taking place April 25-27. The Breeders are back with a new album and tour. Gotta love the recent productivity of Kim Deal! This Saturday... MORE »

Nirvana to Play Coachella With Rivers Cuomo?

By Jim Shearer on 04/01/2008

In what was supposed to be the "best kept music secret of 2008," an official press release leaked earlier this morning, reporting that Weezer's Rivers Cuomo would join Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic for a Nirvana reunion at this month's Coachella Music Festival (Indio, CA), as well as a headlining slot at this summer's annual Lollapalooza Music Festival (Chicago, IL). (left to right: Cuomo, Novoselic, and Grohl will play as Nirvana at this year's Coachella and Lollapalooza) MORE »
