INDIE EAR MADNESS '09: National Championship
By Jim Shearer on 04/07/2009
Filed under: INDIE EAR MADNESS '09
Three weeks ago, Indie Ear Madness '09 began with 64 of the best indie-minded/respected bands in the land. After some fierce and furious competition, TV On The Radio and The Bouncing Souls were the only two acts left standing. Last night they went head to head, competing not only for the 2009 National Championship, but for indie music bragging rights, which (you'd think) would at least guarantee them a free shot of espresso in any non-chain coffee shop in America. NFG Get Their UFC On
By Jim Shearer on 01/08/2009
Filed under: SOONOn March 10, indie-gone-major-gone-indie-again, pop-punkers, New Found Glory, will release their sixth studio album, Not Without A Fight. In keeping with the "fight" theme of the album, New Found Glory have already started the hype machine by rolling out an album pre-sale, an online video game, and a hilarious UFC-like press conference (with more chapters to follow leading up to the album's release). After getting serious with their last studio effort, Coming Home, it appears that New Found Glory have rediscovered their sense of humor, as well as their penchant for stomping on the distortion pedal. Last year they... MORE »
Yes...A Brand New I.S.H.C. Song!
By Jim Shearer on 12/05/2008
Filed under: HODGEPODGEOne of my biggest surprises of 2008 was the International Superheroes of Hardcore. For those that don't know, this is the "hardcore" alter-ego of pop-punkers New Found Glory. This year they released an entire hardcore album that not only sounds legit (yes, Madball and Sick Of It All would approve), but it's hilarious as hell. This week they released a new song, "Keepin' It Real," on their MySpace page. The guys may get upset with me saying this, but I think New Found Glory (at least at this point in time) should take a back seat and let Captain... MORE »
Thursday News on Thursday
By Jim Shearer on 10/02/2008
Filed under: NEWSTwo weeks ago venerable pop-punkers New Found Glory announced that they signed a deal with Epitaph Records. Yesterday, the record label announced that they also signed the venerable emo-punk group Thursday. (left: Thursday find a new home, again.) Like New Found Glory, Thursday has had a history of having problems with their record labels, bouncing from indie to major to indie again. Because Epitaph has a rich history with established punk bands, both groups should be used to their full potential. The moves also re-establish Epitaph as an authority amongst the Warped Tour crowd, whose road-tested, punk-rock appeal seemed... MORE »
New Found Glory Find New Home
By Jim Shearer on 09/19/2008
Filed under: VIDEO BLOGAfter being tossed around by major labels throughout the 2000's, then eventually being kicked to the curb, New Found Glory, one of the few pop-punk bands from this decade who know their punk-rock history and seem to be doing it for all the right reasons, recently made an online announcement about their new record label home. And now the moment you've all been waiting for, New Found Glory decided to sign with... MORE »
International Superheroes of Hardcore, Save Us!
By Jim Shearer on 05/01/2008
Filed under: HODGEPODGEThis past Tuesday was actually one of my favorite album release days in a while. Besides getting new offerings from the Roots and Madonna, silly-power-poppers Nerf Herder made their triumphant return, and speaking of comebacks, Portishead released their first album in 11 years. I'm also lovin' Santogold, but the album that I just can't stop listening to is International Superheroes of Hardcore's Takin' It Ova!. (left: Rest assured, these are no Superhero Sellouts.) For those that don't know, this is the alter-ego band of New Found Glory--a group that was sadly lumped into the power-pop-nice-haircut bands of the early... MORE »
