TALK: Mr. Lif
By Jim Shearer on 04/21/2009
Today marks the release date of Mr. Lif's third full-length album, I Heard It Today, which he considers to be the true follow up to his debut, I Phantom (2002), rather than the actual follow up, Mo' Mega (2006). Although, Mr. Lif claims all is well with his record label home, Def Jux, the politically-minded, laser-lipped MC's latest album is being put out via his newly created Bloodbot Tactical Enterprises. Filed under: INDIE EAR MADNESS '09

After some fierce and furious competition, TV On The Radio and The Bouncing Souls were the only two acts left standing. Last night they went head to head, competing not only for the 2009 National Championship, but for indie music bragging rights, which (you'd think) would at least guarantee them a free shot of espresso in any non-chain coffee shop in America. 10 Reasons Why Murs Should Be President
By Jim Shearer on 10/01/2008
Filed under: LISTSYesterday, underground hip-hop fave Murs, released his brand new album titled, Murs For President. After thinking about it for a second, it doesn't seem like such a bad idea after all. Here are 10 reasons why I think Murs would do al'ight in the Oval Office: 10. Murs' State of The Nation addresses would be done in 16-bar freestyles. Who wouldn't tune in for that?! 9. Murs can skateboard. When was the last time you saw John McCain or Barak Obama pop an ollie? 8. John McCain's running mate, Sarah Palin, played in her high school's state basketball finals... MORE »

TALK: Murs
By Jim Shearer on 07/09/2008
Filed under: TALKMurs Carter's resume reads as such: Underground West Coast rapper, Current TV (Al Gore's channel) host, and now, Presidential hopeful. (left: Mr. Carter, what's your stance on national health care?) Besides his unique rhyme flow and traffic-stopping hairdo, Murs is also known for his blunt honesty and hilarious sense of humor (which sometimes doesn't go over well in the macho world of hip-hop). This year he will be parlaying his upcoming album Murs For President into an actual presidential campaign. Besides talking about his bid for the White House, Murs also speaks freely about steroids in baseball, bravado in... MORE »
SXSW: Day #3
By Jim Shearer on 03/14/2008
BREAKING WEATHER REPORT: For the first time all week, the sun came out in full force. Temperatures are nearing the 90's--alas, warm weather in Austin, TX! Ah, a good night's sleep, it's first time I logged more than five hours the whole trip. This morning I also got to eat breakfast and sort through my SXSW goodie bag for the first time. I've got my second wind! On the bummer-end of things, Nada Surf and Billy Bragg had to cancel our interviews scheduled this week. No hard feelings though, since I'm sure their schedules are pretty packed at this point... MORE »
