LOOKBACK AT A SOUNDTRACK: Napoleon Dynamite
By Jim Shearer on 03/04/2009
Filed under: LOOKBACK AT A SOUNDTRACK
Before I take a look back at the Napoleon Dynamite soundtrack, let it be known that I am a fan of the film. The high school scenes, especially--everything from the lunchroom banter, the awkwardly dressed students, and the tater-tot-smashing bullies--felt more realistic than any made-for-Hollywood movie you'll ever see. And even though Napoleon Dynamite (2004) was paced like an art-house flick, it had enough gags, humor, quotable lines, and--most important--heart, to one day become a film with a mass cult following. TALK: Money Mark
By Jim Shearer on 05/19/2008
Filed under: TALKThe world of Beastie has been knee-deep in the film game recently. It was just a few weeks ago that Adam Yauch premiered his brand new basketball documentary, Gunnin' For That #1 Spot, at New York City's Tribeca Film Festival (which is set to hit theaters on June 27). Meanwhile, earlier this year, the Beastie Boys long-time keyboardist Money Mark was at SXSW, promoting the soundtrack work he did for the film Beautiful Losers. (left: Money Mark welcomes you into the world of...Money Mark). A short time ago, I tracked down Money Mark and we chatted about his work... MORE »
I Was Spoken To By An Advertisement...
By Jim Shearer on 05/01/2008
Filed under: HODGEPODGEYesterday I was reading my new issue of Sports Illustrated on the subway (one of my favorite New York City time-killing pastimes), and came across an ad for Zune, Microsoft's answer to iTunes. (right: Some marketing guru is wetting his pants now, cause I'm lovin' artists on both pages of this ad.) The two-page spread features various three dimensional band names (in all different types of fonts) stacked on top of each other. The ad is nothing groundbreaking, considering iTunes had a similar campaign a year or so ago with hundreds of album covers exploding from an iPod.... MORE »
SXSW: Awards for Best & Worst
By Jim Shearer on 03/17/2008
See the picture to the left? That's an actual photograph taken from my brain on the final day of SXSW--everything was turning into one big blur. It was another fun (yet busy) year in Austin, TX, and I was amazed by the amount of day-shows that all the bands were playing. I wouldn't be surprised if bands started playing SXSW morning matinees in the very near future. Nothing like watching your favorite indie group while eating scrambled eggs and bacon. Before I say goodbye to SXSW 2008, I'd like to hand out some awards for the best-and-worst of this... MORE »
SXSW: Money Mark (Live)
By Jim Shearer on 03/14/2008
Filed under: LIVEI have seen Money Mark perform 20-plus times with the Beastie Boys, but I have never caught one of his solo gigs. So tonight, I thought I owed it to myself and the Beastie-family tree to take in Money Mark's set. I'm also a fan of his work, so I was long overdue for a live show. Early in the set Mark was having technical difficulties. His echo-box (for his guitar) wouldn't work and a friend who came on stage to play theremin couldn't figure out how to position it in the microphone. After the glitches were ironed out,... MORE »
SXSW: Day#2
By Jim Shearer on 03/13/2008
If I was a top-notch blogger in the same arena as Perez Hilton, and--see, I can't even name another prominent blogger. Anyway, if I was blogging by today's standards, I should have already posted five or six blogs by now. Keep in mind though, I come from the 'zine world. Back in the day, all of the info I'm gathering here at SXSW would be used for one issue of a 'zine--which probably wouldn't come out until a month after the event. It's not like I'm sitting poolside licking BBQ off my fingers. It just so happens I've only... MORE »
