By Jim Shearer on 05/01/2009
Happy May Day! Yes, "mayday" can be used as a distress signal, but for many countries around the world, May Day is a joyous holiday that celebrates the social and economic achievements of the labor movement. MORE »

LISTS: The Great & Potentially Great Rock Star Bands
By Jim Shearer on 03/06/2009
Rock Stars--if they're not already--should be placed on the endangered species list. In 2009, we speak of them in the past tense. It has been so long since we've had a Rock Star, we don't even know what a real one is anymore. MORE »
The Week That Was (and Still Is), Jan. 11-18
By Jim Shearer on 01/16/2009
Filed under: THE WEEK THAT WAS (AND STILL IS)Slumdog Millionaire takes home top honors at the Golden Globe Awards (and if you haven't seen the film yet, which is a feel-good-roller-coaster-ride of a movie, what the heck are you waiting for?!), four NFL teams are left standing, temperatures dip into single digits, and George Bush spends his last full week in the White House. Here's what else happened this week: Wednesday Mettalica and Run-DMC are named as inductees to the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, Class of 2009. Jeff Beck, Little Anthony & The Imperials, Boby Womack, and Wanda Jackson also get the nod. One has... MORE »
2008...Never Say Never
By Jim Shearer on 12/30/2008
Filed under: IT'S LIKE THATIronically, Metallica released a single in 2008 called "The Day That Never Comes." (left: Oh the memories of '08.) But in many ways, 2008 was "The Day That Did Come," even for the band mentioned above, who released a back-to-form album, Death Magnetic, which included 8-minute songs, guitar solos, and the return of the old Metallica logo (surfaces of high school desks beware). For those who have ever uttered the word "never," 2008 was a year for them to eat their words:... MORE »
Favorite Music Videos of '08
By Jim Shearer on 12/26/2008
Filed under: VIDEO BLOGIn all honesty, I don't watch nearly as many music videos these days as I have in the past, but c'mon--we're living in a YouTube world baby--music videos are so last century. That being said, a good music video still does something special to me. Here are my favorites of the past year: Gnarls Barkley, "Who's Gonna Save My Soul?" Not only is the relationship dialogue spot on, but the animated heart--which is literally ripped out of the chest--adds another layer of depth to this fantastic break-up story. I also love the fact that Danger Mouse and Cee-Lo are in... MORE »

By Jim Shearer on 12/04/2008
Filed under: NEWSThe 8th Annual Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival has officially been confirmed for June 11-14, 2009. The 4-day music and camping festival will be held, once again, in Manchester, TN. Even though the line-up will not be announced until "late January/early February" you can take a great leap of faith with the festival promoters and purchase General Admission or VIP tickets at 12PM today, as part of a holiday pre-sale. (left: Christmas is the time to say "I love you" by buying your significant other tickets to Bonnaroo.) Though Bonnaroo has always kept true to its jam-band roots, the... MORE »
LUNCHBOX: Lars Ulrich
By Jim Shearer on 10/07/2008
Filed under: VIDEO BLOGToday, Lars Ulrich of Metallica joins me on Lunchbox. We talk about the band's new album, Death Magnetic, and the tendency for fans to use Metallica's first four albums as a measuring stick for every subsequent release. I met with Lars two weeks ago and had exactly 45 minutes to chat with him. A chunk can be seen below and another chunk can been seen on IFC's Automat tonight. The 45 minutes went by in a flash, and I had about 20 more questions I wanted to ask (bummer). However, I'm sure if I had 2 more hours of interview... MORE »
IT'S LIKE THAT: Sad But True
By Jim Shearer on 09/29/2008
Filed under: IT'S LIKE THATLet me introduce you to the "burnout." This now rare species roamed the earth from the 1970's through the 1980's. They could be easily identified by their untied high-top sneakers, tight pants, and a jean jacket with a patch of their favorite heavy metal band emblazoned on the back. A cigarette could usually be seen hanging from their bottom lip, and when they weren't inflicting pain on neighborhood children, they could be found waxing their automobiles, while blasting their favorite heavy metal tunes of the day. I grew up in the same neighborhood with many "burnouts," and let me... MORE »

IT'S LIKE THAT: Losing My Fashion Sense
By Jim Shearer on 09/12/2008
Filed under: IT'S LIKE THATIf someone heard my name and the phrase "trend setter" in the same sentence, they'd probably laugh--especially my close friends. They'd tell you that I've been wearing the same cut-off Dickies shorts, Converse one-stars, and thrift store T-shirts for the last fifteen years. They'd also tell you that if I was indeed a "trend setter," it has been a long, long time since I started one. Just because I haven't changed my wardrobe in over a decade does not necessarily mean that I am not fashion conscious. Oh believe you me, I am definitely conscious of fashion, but I'm... MORE »

IFC LIST MONTH: 50 Bands Your Kids Should Know (25-1)
By Jim Shearer on 07/31/2008
Filed under: LISTSâ†Back to Numbers 26 through 50 25. Buddy Holly Though his career didn't last for long, Buddy Holly left an indelible mark on rock music. For starters, he took something rather nerdy--a pair of black-rimmed glasses--and turned them into a legendary rock and roll accessory. You won't hear any arguments from Donnie Iris, Elvis Costello, or Rivers Cuomo. He also was one of the first artists to get experimental in the studio, introducing overdubbing into his recordings (a technique that uses various vocal takes, simultaneously, to add emphasis to certain parts of a song--which is now a staple in... IFC LIST MONTH: 10 Best Logos In Music History
By Jim Shearer on 07/28/2008
Filed under: LISTSIf you haven't noticed, it's List Month on IFC.com, a brand new list every weekday in July. I wasn't scheduled to make a list today, but I guess I'm so caught up in the madness, I created one anyway. That's right, it's unsanctioned! Think of this as an appetizer for the 50 Bands Your Kids Should Know list which will be posted later this week. For your list viewing pleasure, an idea that randomly came to me last night, here are the 10 Best Logos In the History of Music:... MORE »
IT'S LIKE THAT: Is Metallica Worthy of Hippie Love?
By Jim Shearer on 02/19/2008
Filed under: IT'S LIKE THATThe lineup for the 2008 Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival (June 12-15) was recently announced. One act in particular caught my eye. It wasn't Jack Johnson, Pearl Jam, or even Kanye West -- it was Metallica. Yes, Creeping-Death-Bell-Tolling-Damage-Incorporated Metallica. Since its humble beginnings in 2002, Bonnaroo (in many music circles) has been referred to as "the hippie festival". Each year, I'd watch as my hippie friends and back-pack hip-hop comrades would leave home and venture down south to Manchester, Tennessee. For three days and nights, they would camp out with thousands of strangers on a 700-acre farm of mud. During... MORE »
