IT'S LIKE THAT: Checkin' Back In With Check Your Head

Today, as promised on the landing page of the Beastie Boys' website, they'll be releasing the Collector's Edition of their 1992 album, Check Your Head--featuring digitally re-mastered tracks, as well as bevy of b-sides and rarities. Apparently the Beasties couldn't wait three years to give Check Your Head a proper 20th Anniversary party, like they did for Paul's Boutique earlier this year. And though the third official LP from the Beastie's catalog may have some thunder stolen from an Ill Communication re-issue and a new studio album supposedly dropping later this year, I think it's important to point out that... Happy Birthday Adam Yauch!

I always promised myself that one day, if I ever had a blog, I would make so many Beastie Boy postings that I'd either A.) Get fired, or B.) Get hired by the Beastie Boys. Neither has happened yet, so here's another Beastie Boys blog posting for you to chew on. This one (unlike many other posts I've made) actually has some merit. Today is Adam Yauch's birthday, so all together now kids: "Happy Birthday MCA!" (left: B-Boy Adam Yauch celebrates his B-Day today!) To give you a quick history lesson, MCA is the raspy-voiced Beastie Boy, who plays... MORE »

My Beastie Diorama: Awesome? Or Creepy?

Overcoming my Beastie obsession, one step at a time. (By the way, don't forget that MCA's new basketball doc, Gunnin' For That #1 Spot, is hitting theaters this Friday...) The flash 8 plugin was not detected. var so = new SWFObject("/static/bc/ifc_generic_blog.swf", "lunchboxmca", "380", "295", "8", "#ffffff"); so.addParam("wmode", "transparent"); //change player width so.addVariable("pwidth", 380); //change player height so.addVariable("pheight", 285); //distinguish between different videos so.addVariable("s_movieID", "lunchboxmca"); //insert brightcove title id here so.addVariable("bctid", 1626278372); so.write("lunchboxmca"); MORE »

Inside the Beastie Boys' Oscilloscope Laboratories

By Jim Shearer on 04/25/2008

Yesterday evening, IFC's Lunchbox crew paid a visit to the Beastie Boys' Oscilloscope Studios--or as Adam Yauch later corrected me--the Oscilloscope Laboratories. I'd tell you where it was, but besides signing a confidentiality agreement, myself, along with my fellow IFC crewmembers were blindfolded and driven around in the back trunk of a car. I think we went over a couple bridges, but I couldn't tell you for sure--if I had to guess, I'd say their secret den is somewhere between Jersey City and upstate New York. (left: Adam Yauch testing the Oscilloscope's surveillance system.) We met up with Adam... MORE »

Adam Yauch is Gunnin' For That #1 Spot

By Jim Shearer on 03/20/2008

Adam Yauch (aka, MCA of the Beastie Boys) is set to premiere his brand new basketball documentary, Gunnin' For That #1 Spot at next month's Tribeca Film Festival. The film, which Yauch produced and directed for Oscilloscope Laboratories, follows eight of the top-24 high school basketball players in the country as they prepare to compete in an all-star game held at the legendary Rucker Park in Harlem, NY. The documentary, which combines "Yauch's unique directing style with raw hip-hop music," was shot in 2006. One of the players highlighted, Michael Beasley, is currently playing college ball at Kansas State... MORE »
