Royal Flush Festival opening night + The Raincoats

The Raincoats are one of those obscure late 70's British punk outfits that you'd find on mix tapes made by cool but tumultuous girlfriends back in the 90's when such things were necessities (the tapes and the girlfriends) but otherwise may never have heard of. If not for Kurt Cobain that is. Champion of the obscure UK band (remember The Vaselines), he helped unearth the all girl band when he lost his mind over meeting Raincoat, Ana da Silva, and wrote about it in Insecticide's liner notes among other places. If you're in NY you can check out The Raincoats,... MORE »

LISTS: Top 10 Nirvana Moments

Fifteen years ago today, with a suicide note and a shotgun by his side, Kurt Cobain's dead body was found in his Seattle home. A coroner's report suggested that Cobain had taken his life a few days earlier--probably on April 5. At the age of 27 Cobain had musically achieved beyond his wildest dreams (do you think a chain-smoking janitor really thought he'd ever be called the "voice of a generation"?). The Nirvana frontman would have gone on to accomplish more, but how much more, we'll never know. MORE »

Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic, and Courtney Love can agree on few things, but recently they've been civil towards each other and even gave their blessing on a major motion picture about Nirvana, Come As You Are, scheduled to shoot later this year. MORE »

TALK: Michael Azerrad

A few months ago I had the opportunity to interview music author and journalist, Michael Azerrad, about the Kurt Cobain documentary he helped to create, About A Son (which was released on DVD earlier this year). The film centers around the audio recordings of the series of interviews Azerrad shared with Cobain in the early 90's, which produced the first--and same say the best--Nirvana biography, Come As You Are. Because Azerrad is usually on the other end of the tape recorder, he couldn't resist teaching me some tricks of the trade during our encounter. While sitting in a Greenwich... MORE »

IT'S LIKE THAT: Losing My Fashion Sense

By Jim Shearer on 09/12/2008

If someone heard my name and the phrase "trend setter" in the same sentence, they'd probably laugh--especially my close friends. They'd tell you that I've been wearing the same cut-off Dickies shorts, Converse one-stars, and thrift store T-shirts for the last fifteen years. They'd also tell you that if I was indeed a "trend setter," it has been a long, long time since I started one. Just because I haven't changed my wardrobe in over a decade does not necessarily mean that I am not fashion conscious. Oh believe you me, I am definitely conscious of fashion, but I'm... MORE »

IT'S LIKE THAT: Move Over Air Jordan

By Jim Shearer on 05/22/2008

(left: Yes, that's Kurt Cobain in a Converse ad.) Some of you may remember the old Nike commercial where Michael Jordan, from various locations on the court, slam dunks a basketball at will. His small sidekick, Mars Blackman (played by a then relatively unknown Spike Lee), was so impressed with his buddy's incomparable skills, that he came to the only logical conclusion he could think of, "It's gotta be the shoes." Cause c'mon, how could somebody be that good? He must be getting a little help from somewhere else, and that somewhere else is--aha--his Air Jordan sneakers.... MORE »
