You Know Your Band Has Made It When...

By Jim Shearer on 04/16/2009

Like many other music-minded New Yorkers, I'm in a band. I do it mostly for fun, but, yes, there are some afternoons where I daydream of selling out an arena show, leaping into an adoring crowd, and being passed around from the floor all the way to the upper-deck seats in section 808? MORE »

Favorite Music Videos of '08

In all honesty, I don't watch nearly as many music videos these days as I have in the past, but c'mon--we're living in a YouTube world baby--music videos are so last century. That being said, a good music video still does something special to me. Here are my favorites of the past year: Gnarls Barkley, "Who's Gonna Save My Soul?" Not only is the relationship dialogue spot on, but the animated heart--which is literally ripped out of the chest--adds another layer of depth to this fantastic break-up story. I also love the fact that Danger Mouse and Cee-Lo are in... MORE »

IT'S LIKE THAT: McMusic Memories

People get weepy when stadiums close down (see: Yankee Stadium) and legendary music venues go out--or are forced out--of business (see: CBGB's), so it should come as no surprise that one can get a little nostalgic when certain fast food restaurants are leveled to the ground (see: Shaler McDonald's). This week, one of our Indie Ear contributors (the one who's nuts about Madonna) informed me that my former place of employment back in Pittsburgh, Shaler McDonald's, was whacked with a wrecking ball and is no more. I spent seven-and-a-half years of my life in that building. Most of those... MORE »

LUNCHBOX: Livin' The Life

Watching the following episode of Lunchbox isn't exactly like attending a Deck-of-Jack show, but it'll give you a little taste of what one's like: The flash 8 plugin was not detected. var so = new SWFObject("/static/bc/ifc_generic_blog.swf", "deckofjack", "380", "295", "8", "#ffffff"); so.addParam("wmode", "transparent"); //change player width so.addVariable("pwidth", 380); //change player height so.addVariable("pheight", 285); //distinguish between different videos so.addVariable("s_movieID", "deckofjack"); //insert brightcove title id here so.addVariable("bctid", 1825879455); so.write("deckofjack"); MORE »

Surprising the Drummer

By Jim Shearer on 08/25/2008

I've been to a few surprise birthday parties in my time, but none have matched the unique premise of the one I attended this past weekend. The family and girlfriend of our band's (Deck-of-Jack) drummer, Kid Meevin, planned a surprise birthday party for him, where he would be brought into his own backyard, not knowing that he would step behind his drum kit to perform a full live set of music. Kudos to the masterminds behind it, who also did up a nice little V.I.P. tent for the band, ordered three table-long deli sandwiches, and printed hand towels--which were... MORE »

Taking it Back to the 90's with Starter Jackets

This past Tuesday R.E.M. and Moby released brand new albums, and both were praised for taking it back to their aggressive styles that made them famous in the 90's. Since "taking it back to the 90's" seems to be on the brain this week, I thought you might enjoy this particular video--and besides, what good is having a blog if you can't promote your own band every once in a while?
