Arman Bohn - "Combat" vid taps childhood musings.
By Brandon Kim on 08/17/2009
Arman Bohn got his start playing music well over a decade ago in a couple college bands in Bellingham, Washington. Back then he played with Nick Harmer on bass, Ben Gibbard on drums, and later Jason McGerr - now known as Death Cab for Cutie. Bohn recently released his first solo album, Bits, and has been systematically shooting videos for all the tracks himself, most impressive. He clearly got enough proper play time in his childhood, and like many of us, decided it was worth remembering and revisiting. There's a lot of inspiration there if you can tap into it,... MORE »

'08 WAS GREAT!: Best Way To Market Music
By Jim Shearer on 12/19/2008
Filed under: '08 WAS GREAT!In 2008 there was no better way to market your music than to get inside of Michael Phelps' iPod. When we wasn't in the water, Phelps could be seen bobbing his head with a pair of ear-buds tucked inside his swim cap. Gold medal after gold medal, reporters asked him what he was listening to before each race. His answer? Lil' Wayne. Before you knew it NBC was shouting out Lil' Wayne like it was a Cash Money class reunion. Phelps won eight gold medals and Lil' Wayne scored eight grammy nominations, becoming one of this year's biggest success... MORE »

The deluxe limited edition album includes a bonus disc of a "recently-unearthed recording of the band's first ever show" which took place at the legendary Crocodile Cafe (a venue that made a surprisingly good brunch!) and redesigned artwork with extensive liner notes from Harvey Danger's, Sean Nelson. INDIE ROCK OLYMPIC SKETCHES: Death Cab For Cutie
By Jim Shearer on 08/15/2008
Filed under: INDIE ROCK OLYMPIC SKETCHESWHO: Ben Gibbard (Death Cab For Cutie) SPORT: Power Lifting WHY: Writing songs about having your heart broken is one form of release, lifting weights is another. If anyone ever turned Ben Gibbard on to the latter, Death Cab For Cutie may have to go on sabbatical during the summer Olympics. Gibbard's stocky physique is perfect for the sport, and being that he's from the Pacific Northwest, I'm sure he's carried a heavy log or two in his lifetime.... MORE »

By Jim Shearer on 05/13/2008
Death Cab For Cutie, Narrow Stairs (left) Another consistently good effort, would you expect anything less from Ben Gibbard and crew? Duffy, Rock Ferry She's gonna have a hard time breaking free from the Amy Winehouse comparisons. At least her hair's a different color. We Are Scientists, Brain Thrust Mastery A lot of these songs feel like they could be used for an ending to an 80's movie. Still one of the funniest acts in music today. Bryan Adams, 11 Guess how many songs are on this album?... MORE »
Ben Gibbard Gets His Jazzercise On
By Jim Shearer on 04/02/2008
Filed under: HODGEPODGEBen Gibbard, the bespectacled frontman of Death Cab For Cutie unveiled his latest side-project yesterday. No, it's not a new Postal Service album, it's actually, ahem, a musical endeavor called Just Jazzin'. A one-song sampling of Gibbard's new free-from jazz material is available on his myspace page, where he is rockin' out on a xylophone. According to Gibbard, "....there's this side of me and my music that desires a lack of structure and Just Jazzin' does that for me because I am allowed to just play whatever note comes into my head." (left: Gibbard is a free-form, no structure,... MORE »
