INDIE EAR MADNESS '09: National Championship
By Jim Shearer on 04/07/2009
Filed under: INDIE EAR MADNESS '09
Three weeks ago, Indie Ear Madness '09 began with 64 of the best indie-minded/respected bands in the land. After some fierce and furious competition, TV On The Radio and The Bouncing Souls were the only two acts left standing. Last night they went head to head, competing not only for the 2009 National Championship, but for indie music bragging rights, which (you'd think) would at least guarantee them a free shot of espresso in any non-chain coffee shop in America. By Jim Shearer on 03/26/2009
Filed under: ME LIKEYWhew, 2009 is just flying by, huh? We're already one-fourth of the way through the year. If this were a football game it'd be time to switch ends and start the second quarter. Because I like to get a jumpstart on things, I've already begun compiling my best-of categories for 2009. If the year ended today (which barring a freakish miracle, is not going to happen), here's how my favorites would stack up: MORE »

LISTS: The Great & Potentially Great Rock Star Bands
By Jim Shearer on 03/06/2009
Rock Stars--if they're not already--should be placed on the endangered species list. In 2009, we speak of them in the past tense. It has been so long since we've had a Rock Star, we don't even know what a real one is anymore. MORE »

Alrighty, so the 51st Grammy Awards are in the books, and fittingly--because it seems like the veterans always get a little extra love at the Grammys--Robert Plant and Alison Kraus took home the crown jewel award of the evening, Album of The Year, for Raising Sand. MORE »

Anyone Good With Interpreting Dreams?
By Jim Shearer on 10/15/2008
Filed under: HODGEPODGETwo nights ago I had a--I wouldn't call it a bizarre, but maybe more of a random--dream. This doesn't come close to some of the doozies I've had in the past. My friend Bob (a frequent commenter on this very blog) has been immortalized in couple of my weirdest dreams ever--one involving a grandma in a muumuu and another starring James Earl Jones in an airport bathroom (let's save those for another day though). (left: Why were Matt Bellamy, Thom Yorke, and Chris Martin sitting together at a hockey game?) So a couple nights ago while I was sleeping--from... MORE »

IT'S LIKE THAT: The Last Rock Star?
By Jim Shearer on 05/29/2008
Filed under: IT'S LIKE THATSometimes when writing for a blog called Indie Ear, I (almost) feel guilty for showing excitement over certain major label releases. However--when I take a second to think about it--concealing my emotions for whatever reason is not true independence, and if I'm not independent, what place do I have on a website expressing independent thoughts and ideas (yes that "I" in IFC stands for independent if you didn't know). Ah yes, a very slippery slope my friends. (left: Though this cat looks like your typical mainstream rocker, she's actually signed to a small indie label.) I have some comrades... MORE »

The single will be available for free on the band's website for exactly one calendar week.
