Bob Dylan Christmas

By Brandon Kim on 10/28/2009

The sound of Bobby D's Christmas might be a bit off at times, like a town drunk nasally caroling down the street. It might be outlandishly kitsch. It certainly has it's precious warm moments. Most of all, "Christmas In The Heart" is a hilarious good time. I'm not a surefire Dylan fan as I made clear in a list of my favorite things about Dylan, and his voice continues at a deliberate speed into the great blown. That's hardly the same man who sang "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" for Peckinpah's "Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid." A long way from... MORE »

Chuck Prophet's Top movies of all time + rock and roll.

I asked Chuck Prophet if he could list a few of his favorite films for me while he's finishing up a documentary about the ill timed (swine flu) trip to Mexico he took to make a record. Read this bad ass list he wrote up and if you need a breather, give a listen to this jam, "Sonny Liston's Blues," off his record ¡Let Freedom Ring! - due out Oct. 27. It's gonna take an aspirin! "Sonny Liston's Blues," by Chuck Prophet. These are movies that I've lived with and return to again and again. I've included a couple of... MORE »

Mama take this badge off of me

All the hubbub about Bob Dylan lately has inspired me to listen to a bunch of his records, something I don't normally do. I have some favorite Dylan songs and give props but, I've never been a big fan. You see, I had the unfortunate experience of having some friends and acquaintances who just loved him so much they purposefully left little behind for me. I'm sure there's some parallel in your life. Allow me to indulge in this illustrative tale. There was one guy in particular who aggressively hoarded Dylan to himself. The kind of guy who hosts a... MORE »

The Music Behind My Super Weekend

By Jim Shearer on 02/02/2009

If you give me a few hours, I could deliver you 20 different blog postings on the Pittsburgh Steelers' you're-freakin'-givin'-me-a-heart-attack Super Bowl victory last night. (If you're not from Pittsburgh, you might not understand why the city is so obsessed with its football team.) (left: Here we go Steelers! Here we go!) Because this isn't ESPN.com, I'll spare you the sports analysis and stick with the music that centered around my Super weekend in Pittsburgh: MORE »

IFC LIST MONTH: 50 Bands Your Kids Should Know (25-1)

By Jim Shearer on 07/31/2008

←Back to Numbers 26 through 50 25. Buddy Holly Though his career didn't last for long, Buddy Holly left an indelible mark on rock music. For starters, he took something rather nerdy--a pair of black-rimmed glasses--and turned them into a legendary rock and roll accessory. You won't hear any arguments from Donnie Iris, Elvis Costello, or Rivers Cuomo. He also was one of the first artists to get experimental in the studio, introducing overdubbing into his recordings (a technique that uses various vocal takes, simultaneously, to add emphasis to certain parts of a song--which is now a staple in...
