10RW: You Should Be Excited About Lollapalooza
By Jim Shearer on 04/22/2009
Filed under: 10RW (10 Reasons Why)
Yesterday, the official line-up was announced for this year's Lollapalooza festival, which will be held in Chicago's Grant Park on the weekend of April August 7-9. This is the fifth year of the re-vamped Lollapalooza--which transformed from traveling tour in the '90s to one-stop-shop festival in the '00s--and the fifth time it will take place in Chicago (festival organizers have a 10-year agreement with the city's park district). LISTS: Best Uniforms In Music
By Jim Shearer on 04/14/2009
I love uniforms--doesn't matter if we're talkin' school, work, or sports! Go ahead, ask any of my friends and they'll tell you that not only have I saved every uniform from every fast food place where I've worked, but at the beginning of every sports season I can tell you what stripe, outline, or font has been changed on a team's uniform (and, yes, I think Uni Watch is one brilliant idea for a blog). IT'S LIKE THAT: Checkin' Back In With Check Your Head
By Jim Shearer on 03/30/2009
Today, as promised on the landing page of the Beastie Boys' website, they'll be releasing the Collector's Edition of their 1992 album, Check Your Head--featuring digitally re-mastered tracks, as well as bevy of b-sides and rarities. Apparently the Beasties couldn't wait three years to give Check Your Head a proper 20th Anniversary party, like they did for Paul's Boutique earlier this year. And though the third official LP from the Beastie's catalog may have some thunder stolen from an Ill Communication re-issue and a new studio album supposedly dropping later this year, I think it's important to point out that... Ping Pong, Cowbells, & PB Memories
By Jim Shearer on 02/03/2009
Filed under: SOONIn preparation for next week's 20th Anniversary reissue of Paul's Boutique, The Beastie Boys have reworked the homepage of their website to include a 3 Minute Rule Ping-Ping Simulator (an ode to "3 Minute Rule," a track in which the Beasties recorded live bouncing ping-ping balls), a cowbell and record-scratch activated by your mouse finger, a section where fans are invited to upload a photo and share their favorite Paul's Boutique memories, a Got More _______, Than ________ feature--paying homage to the Beastie Boys signature rhyme scheme in Paul's Boutique ("I got more hits than Sadaharu Oh"), Beastie photos... LISTS: Rotoscope Favorites
By Jim Shearer on 01/26/2009
Filed under: LISTSIf you've listened to the radio at all during the last month you probably noticed that Kanye West is riding high on the latest single from his 808s & Heartbreak album, "Heartless." And, if you've spent any time in front of a computer screen during the last couple of months, there's a good chance you've seen his brightly colored, Hype Williams directed video for the song. (left: Kanye West's rotoscoped alter ego.) "Heartless" uses rotoscope animation, a technique performed by animators in which they trace--frame by frame--over live-action film movement. You've seen it in movies (Waking Life), you've seen... MORE »

Paul's Boutique Turns 20 Years Old
By Jim Shearer on 01/09/2009
Filed under: NEWSI deserve a pat on the back, damn it. I held out nine long days before I posted my first Beastie-related blog of the year. That might be a new record for me. Speaking of which, not only are the Beastie Boys hard at work on theirs--which has been rumored to drop in May (although, because the Beasties like to take their time with things, that could mean May of 2010, 11, 12, etc.)--but they are also re-issuing their now legendary sophomore album, Paul's Boutique. Late last year, the Beastie Boys mentioned it on their website, but this week... MORE »

IT'S LIKE THAT: Highlights For Your Music
By Jim Shearer on 10/30/2008
Filed under: IT'S LIKE THATIf anyone has read the Indie Ear blog since it's inception, you should know that I have a not-so-secret obsession with sports. C'mon, pairing indie bands against each other in a NCAA-style tournament didn't give it away? How about when I sketched out drawings of my favorite indie artists posing as 2008 Summer Olympians? (above: Music and sports have more in common than you think.) Though a high school band geek getting bullied by a varsity football player on a daily basis might disagree, music and sports have a lot in common. Both have the ability to inspire, make... MORE »
Let's Watch Some Political Music Videos...
By Jim Shearer on 10/15/2008
Filed under: LISTS, VIDEO BLOGWhat better way to gear up for the big presidential election happening in just a few weeks, than by watching some politically charged music videos? Well, come to think of it, there are many better ways to gear up for an election (register to vote, educate yourself on the issues, persuade your lazy friends to get out to the polls, etc.). However, if you're sitting in front of your computer today and want to watch some quality music videos chock full of of political empowerment, then I suggest the following: Note: Notice how I didn't call the below list... Hey, Isn't PA a Swing State Too?
By Jim Shearer on 10/15/2008
Filed under: HODGEPODGEIn a rousing example of bipartisanship, the Beastie Boys--my favorite group of all-time (have I ever mentioned that in this blog before?)--have decided to cross musical-genre lines, and will tour with the likes of Sheryl Crow, Jack Johnson, and Norah Jones for the next few weeks to drum up voter interest for Barack Obama in swing states (states in which no candidate has overwhelming support). Because the Beastie Boys have only played Pittsburgh once--my favorite city of all-time (have I ever mentioned that in this blog before?)--and because Pittsburgh is in Pennsylvania, a swing state, I think this is... Beastie Boys Hit the Campaign Trail
By Jim Shearer on 10/10/2008
From the Desk of the Beastie Boys: My Fellow Americans, we are going to do a few shows in hopes that we can remind people to vote. this election is too important, too much is at stake to stay at home. we hope that you can come out, have a nice night, dance, sing, get your freak on, and then wake up the next morning and get everyone that you possibly can to get out and vote. if they have early voting in your state then ask people to vote early, lets get everyone we can out there on... TALK: Material Girl Vs. Scientists of Sound
By Jim Shearer on 10/06/2008
Filed under: HODGEPODGE, TALKToday my friend Peter is in town, and he will be taking me to my first ever Madonna concert. (left: Peter and Jim go at it in a no holds barred, Madonna/B-Boy battle.) Over the years Peter has amazed me with his vast knowledge of the Material Girl. His excitement and passion for all things Madonna reminds me of, well, my excitement and passion for the Beastie Boys. Because it would be nearly impossible to determine if I am a bigger Beastie Boys buff than Peter is a Madonna fan, we decided to school each other on our respective... MORE »
Sasquatch Dead, Beastie Boys Questioned
By Jim Shearer on 08/15/2008
Filed under: HODGEPODGEFor anyone familiar with the Beastie Boys, you may know that between their Hello Nasty and To The Five Boroughs albums, there was a mysterious 6-year hiatus. We later found out in the video for "Triple Trouble" that the Beastie Boys were actually kidnapped and held hostage by Sasquatch. Though the Beastie Boys are purveyors of good will and amnesty, it's also a well known fact that they never forget when people (or creatures) have done them wrong (just ask Russell Simmons or Rick Rubin). Today the body of Bigfoot was discovered, and authorities have named the Beastie Boys... MORE »
Happy Birthday Adam Yauch!
By Jim Shearer on 08/05/2008
Filed under: HODGEPODGEI always promised myself that one day, if I ever had a blog, I would make so many Beastie Boy postings that I'd either A.) Get fired, or B.) Get hired by the Beastie Boys. Neither has happened yet, so here's another Beastie Boys blog posting for you to chew on. This one (unlike many other posts I've made) actually has some merit. Today is Adam Yauch's birthday, so all together now kids: "Happy Birthday MCA!" (left: B-Boy Adam Yauch celebrates his B-Day today!) To give you a quick history lesson, MCA is the raspy-voiced Beastie Boy, who plays... MORE »
