10RW: You Should Be Excited About Lollapalooza
By Jim Shearer on 04/22/2009
Filed under: 10RW (10 Reasons Why)
Yesterday, the official line-up was announced for this year's Lollapalooza festival, which will be held in Chicago's Grant Park on the weekend of April August 7-9. This is the fifth year of the re-vamped Lollapalooza--which transformed from traveling tour in the '90s to one-stop-shop festival in the '00s--and the fifth time it will take place in Chicago (festival organizers have a 10-year agreement with the city's park district). Monday Morning Coachella-Quarterback
By Jim Shearer on 04/20/2009

Did you miss the 10th annual Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival this weekend--the unofficial kickoff to the U.S. summer festival season? Don't worry, I did too. Fortunately, the masses brought their cellphone cameras and camera-cameras and other recording devices to capture the action we missed: MORE »
IT'S LIKE THAT: Where Do You See Yourself In 10 Years?
By Jim Shearer on 04/02/2009
Filed under: IT'S LIKE THATTen years ago this month I made my maiden voyage to New York City. My friend and I boarded a Greyhound bus in Pittsburgh, and some nine-and-a-half hours later--around midnight--found ourselves in the heart of Times Square. We then loitered around for the next four hours, waiting to receive word on when and where we should line up. MORE »
SXSW...One Week Later
By Jim Shearer on 03/27/2009
Sadly, my seven-year streak of attending SXSW came to an end this year. No live music for four straight days (sigh), no warm weather for an east coaster looking to escape a winter that doesn't want to end (sigh), no discovering a handful of promising, up-and-coming indie rock bands (sigh), and no gnawing on a big Texas rib from Iron Works BBQ (sigh). My body does thank me though--I didn't stay up past 2AM one time last week, and come to think, I don't think I had to wait in any long lines either. MORE »
Free Album? How 'Bout an Entrie Back Catalog for Free?
By Jim Shearer on 03/04/2009

If only I knew this years earlier. If only I knew this before I labored over the tedious task of sticking CD's into my computer and converting them into MP3 files. And if I only I knew this before I had to transfer said MP3 files onto my iPod (insert wiping of the brow here). MORE »
IT'S LIKE THAT: Grammy's Highs & Lows
By Jim Shearer on 02/09/2009

Alrighty, so the 51st Grammy Awards are in the books, and fittingly--because it seems like the veterans always get a little extra love at the Grammys--Robert Plant and Alison Kraus took home the crown jewel award of the evening, Album of The Year, for Raising Sand. MORE »
Hooray! and Boo! for Coachella
By Jim Shearer on 02/05/2009
Filed under: HODGEPODGE, NEWSSo the organizers of Coachella finally announced their line-up for this year's festival (April 17-19). As expected, one of the most anticipated U.S. festivals of the year boasts an amazing line-up (that's right, I busted out the word "amazing"). Paul McCartney, Morrissey, Franz Ferdinand, Leonard Cohen, and Conor Oberst play the first day. The Killers, Amy Winehouse, Thievery Corporation, and TV on The Radio will play Saturday. And The Cure, My Bloody Valentine, and Yeah Yeah Yeahs will close out this year's Coachella proceedings. (left: I wanna see bands reunited!@#!) Here's where I kick and cry like a little... MORE »
Never Too Early For SXSW
By Sarah Pesin on 01/15/2009
Filed under: SOONAs the New Year sets in and winter continues to rear its ugly head, the only way to get through these dark months is to look towards the future of spring, sunshine, and more importantly, South by Southwest. The wheels are already set in motion for this year's festival and the first crop of bands playing has just been announced. While the festival is still over two months away, there's no point in not getting a head start on who is worth seeing. (left: Two months and counting.) Of course, my list is extremely biased. Of the over one... MORE »
Paul's Boutique Turns 20 Years Old
By Jim Shearer on 01/09/2009
Filed under: NEWSI deserve a pat on the back, damn it. I held out nine long days before I posted my first Beastie-related blog of the year. That might be a new record for me. Speaking of which, not only are the Beastie Boys hard at work on theirs--which has been rumored to drop in May (although, because the Beasties like to take their time with things, that could mean May of 2010, 11, 12, etc.)--but they are also re-issuing their now legendary sophomore album, Paul's Boutique. Late last year, the Beastie Boys mentioned it on their website, but this week... MORE »
The New Year Begins With a Less Than Stellar Start
By Jim Shearer on 01/05/2009
Filed under: HODGEPODGEHappy New Year! Today is the first day many Americans are returning to work from their holiday breaks. 2008 is over and 2009 is on. Blogs will get back to business as normal, and the search for the 10 best albums of the year begins all over again. So here's my question for the first cerebral day of 2009--with so much promise in the upcoming year and so much to celebrate from the previous one (though it did have its share of crappy moments), why does the start of a new year always suck? (left: Don't judge a year... MORE »
...And On To 2009
By Jim Shearer on 01/02/2009
Filed under: HODGEPODGETo the Indie Ear faithful (I really hope I'm not taking liberties by saying that), you may have noticed that during the last few weeks this very blog has been littered and/or garnished (you pick) with best-of/year-end lists for 2008. Not only was it fun to do this (some might say "lazy"), but it's a necessity as the world of music goes on shut-down mode between the week of Christmas and New Year's. (left: 2009, the last year we'll be able to make these type of sunglasses.) I'm here to let you know, two days into 2009, that my... MORE »
