On her way out at Spout, Karina Longworth noted a few days ago that the film blogosphere can feel like "hundreds of traffic-chasers, who are essentially blaring the same thing, at the same time, all day long." She doesn't like it one bit. And such was the attitude Focus Features CEO/Ang Lee's screenwriter James Schamus brought to his keynote speech at the London Film Festival. "The Class" opens New York.

This year's New York Film Festival will open with the North American premiere of Laurent Cantet's "The Class" (Entre les murs), or so my inbox tells me. "The Class," the stealth late entry that managed to win the Palme d'Or at Cannes, is about a year in an inner city high school, and is one of the few competition films I didn't get to catch, so I'm pleased as rum punch to see that it'll be at the festival.
