Shane Meadows is a remarkably pragmatic director. Today he appeared at London's Nokia store to hype a promotional stunt tied to the London Film Festival, in which aspiring filmmakers are invited to submit a 90-second short showing "what being connect in 2009 means to you." First prize gets you a trip to the fest and the (ambiguously worded) "chance" to work on Nokia's next ad campaign, but showing up at the store got you the more realistic chance to talk with Meadows and have him view your work, If anyone knows how to pragmatically negotiate the line between getting paid... "Up In The Air" could be this decade's "Fight Club."

Stills from "Up in the Air," the new film from Jason "Juno" Reitman, have been gathered over at the Playlist, and while I'm not usually into the tea-leaf reading that occurs when an anticipated upcoming movie releases things like this, I'll take any excuse to write about an adaptation I've been anticipating for almost a decade -- one whose meaning has almost completely shifted. Walter Kirn's novel "Up in the Air" dropped in the summer of 2001, a more innocent age, to high sales and acclaim. It follows Ryan Bingham, "career transition counselor" (he fires people) and air-travel veteran, who... MORE »

Selections from David Fincher.

A few highlights from "Behind Button: A Conversation with David Fincher," hosted by the Film Society of Lincoln Center's Kent Jones to close out their Fincher retrospective pairing the director's work with films he likes, a set-up that yielded the whiplash double feature of "Se7en" and "Mary Poppins." He was drawn to "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" because it seemed to offer "a more complete telling of a love story... because it involved one being there to help the other pass on," and found that "there were a lot of moments in the script that were semi-clichés" that he... Yay! Awards!

Courtney Hunt's "Frozen River" may turn out to the year's big winner, at least in the indie film award ghetto -- it won Best Feature at the Gothams on Tuesday, with star Melissa Leo taking the Breakthrough Actor award, and it's been nominated for seven Spirit Awards. "Trouble the Water" took the Best Doc prize, Lance Hammer was deemed breakthrough director for "Ballast," and "Sita Sings the Blues" picked up the Best Film Not Playing at a Theater Near You prize. More at indieWIRE. Meanwhile, the National Board of Review, traditionally the first of the circles to hand out best... MORE »

Telluride's quiet year.

The unique Telluride Film Festival, which (in)famously asks that you place your trust in it, purchase your pass and book inordinately expensive lodging in its small Colorado mountain town before ever knowing what films will be there, kicks off Friday, and has just announced its line-up. Due to the writers strike, this year's festival seems to be low on major premieres -- "Juno" and "Walk the Line" are among the films to have first screened there, though this year's sneak peeks are still a secret. Paul Schrader's "Adam Resurrected," a film about a circus performer (Jeff Goldblum) forced to perform... MORE »

Trailering: Benjamin Button, Neil Young.

I don't think the otherwise gloriously shiny teaser trailer for David Fincher's "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" needs such twinkly Tim Burton music, and Brad Pitt's accented voiceover at the beginning worries me a bit, but it does look awfully good. The film is an adaptation of a short story by F. Scott Fitzgerald (that can be read online) about a man who's born elderly and who ages backward, a conceit that's lodged itself in the plenty of noggins — most recently, Andrew Sean Greer's novel "The Confessions of Max Tivoli," the title story of Gabriel Brownstein's collection "The...
