Less Cowbell
By Sarah Scully on 08/15/2008
By Sarah Scully If you are one of the tens upon thousands of people planning to attend Barack Obama's unprecedented, football stadium nomination speech, be warned... you will have to leave your roller skates, dogs and cowbells at home. Here is the official Press Release on verboten items: FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE August 15, 2008 DENVER -- As the Colorado Campaign for Change prepares to begin community credential distribution this weekend for the fourth night of the 2008 Democratic National Convention, the Democratic National Convention Committee (DNCC) announced more details for the event on Thursday, August 28, at INVESCO Field at... A World Without Sarcasm: Attempt To Point Out Absurdity Just Prompts More Absurdity
By Sarah Scully on 07/15/2008
By Sarah Scully In a commentary on how off-base some of the attacks on Barack Obama have been, the New Yorker put out a cover illustrating nearly every slanderous charge that has been leveled against the candidate. As a result, they have offended the candidate and invited censure from his supporters. On the one hand, New Yorker readers are largely assumed to be highly educated, fairly liberal and appreciative of the Colbert-style sarcasm that the magazine was going for but on the other hand, it is a nationally circulated periodical that is displayed on grocery store racks in full view... Dr. Fulani and the Very Good Point
By Sarah Scully on 06/23/2008
Amidst the red and blue swirl of dialogue, a question was posed from the crowd: what about the independent voter? How were these partisan activist bloggers reaching out to this key demographic? The thought was dismissed with a mutually agreed upon explanation that there really was no such thing- independents fell in line with one party or the other. The question came from none other than Dr. Lenora Fulani, an independent presidential candidate in 1988 and 1992 and the first African American female to appear on the ballot in all 50 states. Leading the New York Independence Party, she has... MORE »
Political Paradigm Shift
By Sarah Scully on 05/15/2008
By Sarah Scully Sure the Democrats have taken the lead in breaking racial and gender boundaries but Republicans are not far behind. Some of the most traditional conservative thinkers are suggesting that John McCain pick from a list including Carly Fiorina, Bobby Jindal, and Condi Rice for his running mate to balance the ticket. Whether any of these ticket combinations happen, this marks a dramatic shift from the conventional wisdom of previous elections that deemed white Christian males as the only safe bets. MORE »
The Democrats Bitter Butter Battle
By Sarah Scully on 04/16/2008
By Sarah Scully Having run out of substantive matters to disagree over, the Democrats have engaged in a battle over minutiae worthy of Dr. Suess. Much like The Butter Battle Book in which two very similar groups start a cold-war-style arms race (that includes a weapon called a "Blue-Gooer") over whether to butter one's bread side-up or side-down, the vitriol within the Democratic party seems to increase in proportion to the triviality of the argument. Obama called Pennsylvanians bitter! Hillary can't remember when she last held a gun! The one person who seems to be benefitting from this war of... MORE »
Raising The Conservative Barr
By Sarah Scully on 04/08/2008
By Sarah Scully The Left may be split right now but the Right could end up fractured down the road if Georgia's former Republican Rep. Bob Barr turns his exploratory committee into a full-blown Libertarian candidacy. With the Democratic bare-knuckle fight in its ninth round, it's been easy to forget about the disgruntled Republicans who were tearing John McCain apart even as he was claiming the nomination. Well before divided Dems threatened to vote for McCain, Republican stalwarts raged against their own frontrunner, citing a dearth of conservative bona fides. Once the dust settled however, in true elephant form, the... MORE »
If Mohammed Won't Come to The Mountain... The Mountain Will Offer Him a Cabinet Position
By Sarah Scully on 04/04/2008
By Sarah Scully The Democratic nomination will likely be won by the smallest of margins with the final votes coming from superdelegates. Some Democrats argue that there are a few "super-superdelegates," such as Al Gore, whose endorsements could sway enough opinions to end the contest immediately. Whether this is a valid conviction or not, these party superstars have so far refused to intervene. In the absence of their support, the candidates have decided to simulate an association. Earlier this week, Obama and Clinton both indicated their intentions to bring Gore in to their respective administrations (should he be interested). This... MORE »
