An Unscientific Experiment

By Sarah Scully Try typing the names of different potential VP choices with "Obama" into a Google Shopping browser... -Obama-Kaine products are hard to find. -Obama-Bayh gear is a little more prevalent. You can even find a dog t-shirt. -Obama-Biden tuns out a lot more results of official looking hats, t-shirts and pins. -Obama-Clinton will generate the most results, though many of the items fall into novelty category and generally look pretty bootleg. -Obama-Hagel baby bibs retail for around $10 and buttons may be purchased in bulk but very little merchandise otherwise. Now try it with McCain -McCain Romney gear... MORE »

What Everyone Is Talking About Today
By Sarah Scully on 08/12/2008
By Sarah Scully In his autopsy on Hillary Clinton's campaign, Joshua Green unearthed a number of e-mails, diaries and meeting notes that are now available to read on The Atlantic's website. What is revealed is a campaign full of incredibly determined advisers, all with different battle plans and without a unifying credo. Pollster-turned-strategist, Mark Penn is prevalent throughout the documents as a voice for negative, sometimes merciless, campaigning that was not always heeded and eventually dismissed. The revelation could serve the Republicans well as a guide of what not to do and a reminder of Obama's potential weak spots. The... MORE »
Is Something Rotten In The State Of The Democratic Party?
By Sarah Scully on 08/07/2008
By Sarah Scully Recent word from Hillary Clinton's office urging a full vote of all delegates at the convention have sparked an abundance of headlines suggesting that her campaign may not be dead. Clinton has explained that the vote will serve as a catharsis for her supporters, giving them emotional clearance to move on to Senator Obama, once their voices have been heard. Supporting this is the fact that counting every delegate at the convention, even though a nominee has been selected, is part of a long held party tradition of acknowledging the also-rans and demonstrating respect for the democratic... IFC LIST MONTH: The 12 Worst Gaffes of the 2008 Election
By William Rabbe on 07/15/2008
Filed under: ListsBy Sarah Scully and William Rabbe Every candidate makes mistakes every election cycle -- but in 2008, with the popularization of online video, they're more noticeable. The following is a list of the top 12 worst gaffes of 2008 (so far). 12. Lightning Strikes Rudy Giuliani While Former Candidate Rudy Giuliani was explaining his pro-choice position on abortion, lightning strikes, disrupting the audio from his microphone. The lesson? Candidates should remember that God is always watching. 11. Barack Obama's Botches Tornado Death Toll Numbers Barack Obama vastly over-stated the number of deaths resulting from tornados in Kansas, saying 10,000 people... MORE »
IFC LIST MONTH: Top 10 Presidential Sex Scandals
By William Rabbe on 07/09/2008
By Sarah Scully & William Rabbe Politics makes for strange and sometimes scandalous bedfellows. What are power, fame and money without sex? What is a presidency without secret children, hush money or naughty interns? Presidential sex scandals go back as far as the Founding Fathers and we've put together a list of the most scandalous... callBrightcove(1655720662, 380, 285, "#ffffff"); 1. THOMAS JEFFERSON During Thomas Jefferson's first term, rumors were flying -- and in fact, printed that he had fathered children by his slave, Sally Hemings. Evidence strongly suggests that it is true but DNA findings have been inconclusive. The matter... MORE »
Clinton's Veep Gambit
By William Rabbe on 06/05/2008
By William Rabbe (Photo Credit: Charlotte Rabbe) One of the more telling moments for me at Clinton's Tuesday event was when Lanny Davis mistakenly slipped a word into our interview, he said: "... when I think about her running for Vice President..." Hmmm... wait a second. For Vice President? I asked if he really meant: if she gets to run as Vice President -- he explained that he was tired and yes, he didn't mean to say that she would run for the office but that he felt she would be a good candidate if she were picked (and is... Anticipation
By William Rabbe on 06/03/2008
There has been a barrage of conflicting reports on what is going to happen at the Clinton event this evening: 1. AP: "Hillary Rodham Clinton will concede Tuesday night that Barack Obama has the delegates to secure the Democratic nomination, campaign officials said, effectively ending her bid to be the nation's first female president." 2. Then Clinton said AP was incorrect... 3. Or maybe she'll only concede the delegate race and keep the campaign rolling?? UPDATED: The AP is reporting as of 1:40 PM that Obama has clinched the nomination. MORE »
Hold Your Donkeys... It's Any Minute Now
By Sarah Scully on 06/02/2008
By Sarah Scully The question Democrats have been asking themselves for the last couple of months may be answered this week... Will Hillary Clinton end her campaign tomorrow night, followed by an endorsement of Barack Obama on Wednesday? A number of signs point in that direction. One big sign, by the name of Harold Ickes, was pointing in the opposite direction but now it seems he was simply being a stickler for the rules (as he is known to be), waiting until Obama has every last one of the 2118 delegates to make it official. Obama seems to be picking... MORE »

Vice S. C. A. G.?
By Sarah Scully on 05/23/2008
By Sarah Scully It's anyone's guess as to the true motivation of the Clinton campaign at this point. Are her intentions towards another office? Vice President seems a long shot but perhaps Supreme Court Justice or Attorney General? The S. A. T. results are in and Clinton scored high in Verbal but not in Math. However sexist the test may be, surprisingly, Senator Smartypants (and she is smart, probably smarter than you and me put together) did not perform as expected. Perhaps it was arrogance or all-too-human miscalculation, but the numbers just aren't there to support a presidential candidacy. Hillary... MORE »
The Curious Case Of The Democratic Nomination
By Sarah Scully on 05/20/2008
By Sarah Scully The Clinton Campaign sent out the below memo yesterday, effectively throwing a bucket of ice water on Obama's plans to declare virtual victory tonight after reaching a majority of delegates. Holding fast to her argument that she is more electable in certain states and with certain demographics, Clinton has been building her case like a trial lawyer, adding to it this week with documentation from none other than Karl Rove (there is a reason you hear the phrase "politics makes for strange bedfellows" uttered so often), she is determined to convince party leaders and other superdelegates that... Bang! And They're Off!
By Sarah Scully on 05/19/2008
By Sarah Scully The starting gun of the general election has gone off and it was fired by non other than our president, who used an address before Israel's Knesset to liken "some" Democrats's ideas to negotiate with hostile governments like Iran and Venezuela to Neville Chamberlain's appeasement of Hitler in the 1930s. Many took this as a direct attack of Barack Obama in an effort to help fellow Republican John McCain. McCain took the cue and made his own remarks, directly criticizing the senator from Illinois. Democrats reacted with outrage, en masse, including Hillary Clinton. This now puts her... MORE »
THE EMPRESS HAS NO DELEGATES
By Sarah Scully on 05/07/2008
By Sarah Scully The Rocky and Eight Belles metaphors were more true than the Clinton campaign realized as they became harbingers of her ultimate defeat. The fighting filly has fallen. What she must decide now is how she will exit the ring- on a stretcher or clasping the hand of her opponent. She might even be carried out on the shoulders of her supporters if she withdraws after her likely victory in West Virginia on Tuesday. Then she could really go out like Rocky, the beloved scrapper who lost honorably. Howard Dean astutely pointed out that the unity and strength... MORE »
Clinton Camp. to Wake up to One Heck of a Hangover
By Sarah Scully on 05/06/2008
By Sarah Scully Work crews are striking the stage and sweeping up confetti but Indiana has yet to be called. Clinton gave her victory speech when she was several points ahead and exited smiling. Now it looks questionable as to whether she can even call this a victory. Gary, Indiana is one of the last areas to be counted as it is in an earlier time zone with polls closing later. It is also the last to be counted because the turnout has been so high. With the mayor predicting an Obama blowout, Clinton's tenuous win is vanishing by the... MORE »
The Twelve Labors of Hillary
By Sarah Scully on 05/06/2008
By Sarah Scully Texas, Ohio, Pennsylvania and now Indiana. In a clever, though risky strategy, the Clinton campaign has continued to put forth the idea that certain primaries are "do or die" for their candidate and many have taken the bait. The campaign has effectively changed the conversation to emphasize the meaning of wins in particular states over others, ignoring the actual number of delegates awarded. As a result, Hillary has been positioned as some sort of mythological heroine, overcoming the arbitrary challenges set forth by the gods so as to prove her strength and justify her immortality. Hercules had... MORE »
Clinton's German Hunting Rife Endeavor in Indiana
By William Rabbe on 05/05/2008

A Review Of The Week's News
By Sarah Scully on 05/03/2008
-Reverend Wright provoked anew with an appearance at the National Press Club that added fuel to the controversy dogging Barack Obama. Some say this was a blessing in disguise for Obama, as he was given the opportunity to divorce himself from his former pastor once and for all. -Whether it was Reverend Wright or the momentum from Pennsylvania, Hillary Clinton has managed to close in on Obama's lead in North Carolina and pull ahead in Indiana. This according to polls, which have been pretty accurate in the last few contests. -John McCain, who has been using his time out of... MORE »
Bomb, Bomb, Bomb vs. Nuke, Nuke, Nuke...
By William Rabbe on 04/23/2008
Hillary Clinton on Iran: "In the next 10 years, during which they might foolishly consider launching an attack on Israel, we would be able to totally obliterate them." [Emphasis added] Last time I checked, the Republican candidate hasn't even used language this strong -- and certainly McCain facetiously chirping "bomb bomb Iran" is nothing like using the term "obliterate". "Obliterate" has nuclear implications, whereas "bomb" does not. Expect to see an escalation of rhetoric against Iran.... Maybe this is John McCain's opportunity to seek retribution for what the Democrats did to Barry Goldwater in 1964. MORE »
