The fourth and, to date, final entry in the highly lucrative action franchise finds LAPD detectives Riggs (Mel Gibson) and Murtagh (Danny Glover) both way too old for this s**t (Riggs even admits to such by finally embracing the inevitable and quoting one of his partner’s favorite sayings) as they take on a gang of Chinese counterfeiters, finding quite the formidable foe in deadly Triad negotiator Wah Sing Ku (Jet Li, making his American film debut). Meanwhile, the partners are both in a family way as Internal Affairs officer Lorna Cole (Rene Russo) is pregnant with Riggs’ child and young LAPD detective Lee Butters (Chris Rock) has married Murtagh’s daughter Rianne (Traci Wolfe) — undercover, of course, as Daddy doesn’t want his little girl getting hitched to a cop. Oh, and of course there’s the long-suffering Leo Getz (Joe Pesci), now a private dick and, as always, the default target for allegedly hilarious abuse and humiliation. It was clear that it was time to call it quits when “Lethal Weapon 4″ proved to be both the most expensive and least financially successful installment in the series, though the idea of a “Lethal Weapon 5″ (you know Warner Bros. is up for it anytime, anywhere) probably sounds really good to Mel Gibson right about now. – IFC Staff
