All is most definitely not what it seems to be in director/co-writer Laurence Malkin’s intense chamber thriller. Martijn (Ryan Phillipe), a Dutch pianist, is en route to Morocco to set up a food charity; upon landing, he and his travel guide Gavin (Colm Meaney) are quickly kidnapped by terrorists and taken to an undisclosed location. Gavin is soon killed and Martijn undergoes a torturous interrogation session implemented by the ruthless Ahmat (Laurence Fishburne), who demands to know where the musician got the funding to set up the program … and threatens to cut off the hostage’s fingers one at a time until he gives up the information. What’s a piano player to do … and is this Dutchman really just a tickler of the ivories with a desire to help poor kids? “Five Fingers” twists and turns its way to an unexpected conclusion (and location, at that), playing the audience throughout as if it were a set of 88 keys. – IFC Staff
