Make Media Matter

An American Love Affair: Porn & Media

Category: Awareness

Porn is multi-billion dollar industry. Americans produce an overwhelming amount of the pornographic content that exists in the world. It has been around since the dawn of time, and now more than ever the media is playing a big part.

Egyptians had stone carvings, Indians had the book of the Kama Sutra, the French had the movie theaters, and now Americans have the Internet. The media has used its vast network of technology to reach out to Americans and saturate the market with porn in all its forms, which has made it nearly impossible to escape.

Many people might not realize what the pornographic industry has done to our society. The Industry can make or break technology. It was Porn that decided who would win in the battle between Beta Max tapes and VHS. The Industry picked VHS to record and sell its videos on. Does anyone even remember Beta Max? Now a new battle is ensuing, HD or Blue Ray. It is not only videos that the porn industry is concerned with. With the rise of our portable world, with ipods, and cell phones, the Industry is using their power and innovativeness to break into our newfound worlds

The Barbie Standard is another idea that the Pornographic community has embraced and is forcing it onto our society. Blond hair, blue eyes, skinny but gifted with a large chest, seems to be what it takes to be popular in porn. The idea of beauty is seen as these women in the films, and our society is falling in line with it.The media has pushed this "Barbie Standard" on men and women all around the nation. "If you don't look like the people on TV you aren't what everyone would call pretty." Porn 4.pngFat women are almost non-existent on television these days, and the media doesn't show any signs of stopping this trend. There are even have reality show with pornstars on them, chronicling their lives in the Industry.

Jean Kilbourne a pioneer in woman's advertising said "Women learn to compare themselves to other women, and to compete with them for male attention. This focus on beauty and desirability effectively destroys any awareness and action that might help to change that climate." The media says "Sex sells," and so far they are right.
The media has made sexual content so prevalent in our lives that nearly half of all households say that porn is a problem in their homes. The access of such material is easy and the Internet has been its main catalyst. In America children are exposed to porn and other sexually explicit material so easily, whether it is from TV, movies or the Internet. The average age children are exposed to porn is eleven and there is no doubt that it will be even earlier further on down the road.

As a consumer nation Americans must better understand how the media can influence society. It can't be denied how omnipresent the porn industry has become. Through different media systems it has been able to influence how we look at ourselves and others. From cosmetic surgery to prime time television porn has become the face of American sexuality.
