The Information Nation: Population - 6.5 Billion
By Eric Ivanov on 06/10/2009
Category: AwarenessNo matter what happens today there will always be flag waving nationalists that support anything their country does, and we will still be stuck with the tie-dye wearing hippies. In the ever connected world we live in today there is an expanding gray area, because information is extremely easy to find and consume.
What does that all mean? It boils down to one thing. People are now less likely to be led astray from the reality of things because we have access to worldwide information that lets us form our own opinions. We are no longer forced to watch only thirteen stations on the TV but can potentially get over a thousand different channels from the seat of the couch. We can watch Italian news, Russian news, Arab news, and all of them are written and produced by people other than Americans. It gives us the ability to see what the media and the people from that nation are thinking. We get unfiltered news, safe from the American monocle that perverts stories into something "safe" for the average household.
The Internet has let us peer into the lives of many, from your next-door neighbor, to a family in Indonesia, whose house was destroyed by a tsunami. We can get answers to any of life's questions, because people from all over the world are joining the movement towards a global citizenship,
where everyone is involved in everyone else's business. People far across the Atlantic are concerned with what the US government is doing, and Americans are worried about China's deal to buy the American car brand Hummer. It all comes down to this. People from different nations are starting to become more globally connected. Governments, and especially media networks are having a tougher and tougher time spinning stories in their favor. People can now access information from almost anywhere and find out if it is true. Americans are starting to become concerned with global matters and the impacts that decisions will make on the Earth. We are becoming so connected with people and places that were out of our reach only twenty years ago, and it is having serious results.
Are the huge amounts of readily accessible information causing us to identify ourselves less as Americans, and more as global citizens? Will nationalism vanish forever, or is it being redefined by the new media system? Only one thing can be said, there are so many voices out there, and each one is vying for your ear. Have a listen, and find the truth.
