The Rise of New Media

Category: ActionThe Television has too many channels to count, but only about two opinions; you are wrong and I am right. Where did all of the diversity go? It moved just next door to the Internet. Now with a few taps on the keyboard anyone can participate in the new media system that we have before us.
The Internet has allowed us to penetrate the once "big-media" dominated scene. It used to be that people would sit in front of the radio or TV and listen to the same people every night talk about pretty much the same thing. That is no longer the case, many have decided to stop listening and start talking. They are using the Internet to see, hear, and talk about what is happening in the world. There are bloggers who have broken into the public sphere and are now contributing a new voice to the media. People are listening to them and asking questions on the Internet. Bloggers are doing the job of the early 18th Century pamphleteers, except they are reaching a broader audience faster. There are more ways than just blogging to participate in the media world.
There are open forums that people can post images, clips, and ideas on anything. These are allowing more and more people to not only listen to ideas from the major media corporations, but to add commentary and spark debate among peers. There are also small online newspapers that are forming because of the large audience that can be reached over the Internet and presenting different perspectives, from the huge international news organizations, on current events.
Another part of the emerging media system are podcasts. They are enabling a more captive medium to pull people in and listen to what they have to say.
Many professionals are producing podcasts, along with universities and colleges. These are all parts of the new media system that are creating and encouraging a participating audience. We can now find different points of view not on the television, but on the Internet. We can ask questions, write about our beliefs and experiences, take part in lively debates, and even start our own websites that offer a multitude of different media sources, from video to a streaming live radio show. As people begin to see the benefits of a participatory media system the demand is growing. As always we must remember to be vigilant in our quest for the truth in media. Don't believe it, until you check it.
