Make Media Matter

About Make Media Matter

Each of us is inundated by more media now than ever before – and its only increasing. Yet, we as a society have not found a common language that enables us to untangle the myriad of conflicting messages we consume every day.

IFC's Make Media Matter is an interactive forum for fostering better communication and deeper understanding of the vital role media plays in our lives, society and world. Bringing together information and expertise from universities across the nation, we spark dialogue, expand comprehension and provide leadership, helping a new generation experience media in a more meaningful way.

If we as a society are to harness the true potential of media, we must meet, communicate, challenge, share and empower ourselves to consume and create media in ways that strengthen global citizenship. This is the goal of IFC's Make Media Matter.

To communicate, we need a common language.
Hofstra Professor Paul Mihailidis' "5 A's of Media Literacy" provides a basic vocabulary for our site, helping to facilitate discussions by consumers and creators of media across the spectrum.

  • ACCESS: Who controls access to the information you use?
  • AWARENESS: How does the media you consume affect your values?
  • ASSESSMENT: How do you assess a media experience to better understand it?
  • APPRECIATION: How can you better appreciate a diversity of voices?
  • ACTION: How can media literacy empower you to take action?

To deliver a constant stream of new content,
IFC's Make Media Matter will grow and evolve with the times to include:

  • The latest media news
  • Panels on important issues
  • Entertaining quizzes
  • Step by Step exploration of the 5 A's of Media Literacy
  • Guides for consuming and creating your own media content. Related clips from IFC's "Media Project" & Media Lab Studios

Hofstra's Journalism, Media Studies and Public Relations program is among the finest in the country, training and educating students for careers in print, broadcast and Internet journalism, media analysis, and public relations. Students receive a solid foundation in news reporting, media ethics, history and law. Our courses are taught by a Pulitzer Prize- and Emmy Award-winning faculty with an average of 20 years of experience in the field. Top professionals from every field of journalism regularly join the faculty as lecturers and adjunct professors, sharing their cutting-edge expertise. With close proximity to the communications capital of the world, New York City, our students often find valuable internships with media heavyweights such as CBS, The New York Times, The Daily News, Condé Nast, and Time Warner.

Hofstra's Department of Radio, Television, Film (RTVF) features an award-winning, diverse and experienced faculty committed to preparing students for the rapidly-changing world of mass communication in the 21st Century. Incorporating the latest media production technology within a rigorous liberal arts framework designed to intellectually challenge students our academic programs provide you with countless opportunities to express yourself creatively and responsibly through film, television, radio, and online media.

At the graduate level, the RTVF Department offers a comprehensive, one-of-a-kind program in the greater New York metropolitan area: a Master of Arts degree (MFA) in Documentary Studies and Production that includes radio, television and film in its curriculum. Combining theory and history with a wide selection of production courses that progressively lead towards the completion of a master's thesis documentary film, the MFA program reflects the important balance between research and critical inquiry on the one hand, and the development of the necessary technical skills required to work in the industry on the other. The MFA program can be taken either full time or part time.

The RTVF faculty includes a multi-Emmy Award winning television director, the FM radio personality with the record for the most years broadcasting on the same station in the New York market, groundbreaking documentary and feature filmmakers and television producers whose diverse body of work has been broadcast and screened nationally and internationally, two Fulbright Scholars, veteran broadcast journalists, as well as several published authors. Their unique experiences are shared daily with students in small and mid-sized classes, allowing for a unique interaction that results in a mentoring process that is nourished throughout the four-year college experience.

Hofstra's Department of Speech Communication, Rhetoric, and Performance Studies provides a liberal arts education that aims to nurture informed, skillful, and ethical communicators who will become active participants in local, national, and international communities. The teaching and research interests of our faculty include political communication, intercultural communication, performance studies, cultural studies and popular culture, social movements, persuasion, history and theory of rhetoric, and public address.
