Driving from Long Island to Kansas City, I encountered the most insane, torrential down pour while on the road. Before we knew it, the car was being stoned to death with hail. We were dead stopped in the middle of a highway not being able to see a thing and praying that no one would crash into us from behind. I don't think the question is "why were you out there in the first place"...it's more like, "why would you ever go to Kansas City in the first place?!"
I've never had the honor of witnessing a tornado first hand. One time in Australia, I had to cut open a kangaroo and crawl inside for warmth. Funnel of Darkness for life!!
I eat Tornadoes
Poop Lightning,
and Pass Hail stones.
Funnel of Darkness...Oh Yes!
OK reppin
well this is an interesting question. I have been chasing for 5 years, and yesterday was one of the most intense chases I have ever been on. It starts off with car problems, but the "Severe Hail Intercept Truck", or the SHIT, was still drivable. So off we go, all the way into KS. We get on the storm of the day, and my car is inhaling tons of dirt and dust being kicked up by the 60mph outflow winds. We get back out ahead of the storm, and get back into position, and then we find 2 grass fires started by lightning. As we get close to shoot video, and stream it live to TornadoVideos.Net, the outflow winds of the storm pummel us with 80mph winds filled with dirt, sand, rocks, suit, and smoke! it was some intense video, and once the winds subsided, we tried to get out of there. Just as I thought we were escaping the storms wrath, our South road option endedn and it was either West into the smoke and dirt, or East to the next souther road, maybe encounter some large hail... So we went East, and boy did we screw up. 60mph wind-driven hail, some of them stones reached 1.25 inches! I was sure my driver-side windows were going to explode onto us, but we made it to the South road option, and just in time. The golfballs started pounding, and visibility decreased. eventually our luck ran out, and we found a nice ditch to slide into. GAME OVER.
Dude, thats a gnarly chase day, where in Kansas was this mayhem occuring?
mongobk, this specific supercell developed right over Kingman, KS, and carved a path of hail/wind for over 5 hours, churning across 5 counties, all the way to Kingfisher, OK. not bad for July!
3 hours*
Mikey, are you doing any tracking of these hurricanes that are coming up the east coast?
i would be, if they were worth chasing. I don't feel too optimistic about any major hurricane landfalls this year. ElNino doesn't create the best conditions for cane's but if theres a good cat 3+ coming ashore, the SCTV team will be there with their pants off.
