“Gremlins” reboot in the works?
Rumor has it that Warner Bros. is looking to remake the classic Joe Dante film.
It’s being rumored yet again that “Gremlins” is going to get a reboot. Though the franchise has stood on its own for over two decades, Warner Bros. is allegedly negotiating with Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment to bring the movie to the big screen again.
This news comes from Vulture, who claims that WB has a good chance of making this reboot happen. Updated the film for the modern day has been a subject that’s been discussed a number of times in the past, but each time talks fell threw.
IFC caught up with “Gremlins” and “Gremlins 2: The New Batch” director Joe Dante in October and asked him if he thought the horror film would work in the present day. He admitted that he was surprised it worked when it did come out.
“I’m also not sure that, if the original ‘Gremlins’ had come out a month earlier or a month later, it would have had the same impact. There’s certain serendipitous moments where the right movie comes out at the right time and that was mine,” he said. “I think the same movie could have come out a year earlier or a year later and maybe not have had as much impact. It just happened to hit the sweet spot.”
As for the frequent talks of making a reboot or sequel, Dante admitted that he thought the new “Gremlins” film would end up completely different.
“Obviously it’s not going to be ‘Gremlins 3′ because you cant continue the story from the previous movie with the same characters. My guess is they would probably go back and start over and try to reimagine a different kind of ‘Gremlins’ movie,” he said. “The problem that they have is that the ‘Gremlins’ movies were informed entirely by the technology that we had available. As the technology got better, in the second film were able to do more things with the gremlins than we could in the first film, but now the technology’s all obsolete and it’s all CGI, and so that would require looking at the property a completely different way, I think.”Gremlins, Joe Dante
