Exclusive premiere: Miracle Fortress “Raw Spectacle”

Montreal’s Miracle Fortress, a.k.a. Graham Van Pelt’s, new video from from 2011′s “Was I The Wave,” is the result of a of an “X-Files” binge and a lot of pyrotechnic derring-do. “We set out to create our own variation on the supernatural misfit story, without the trappings of CGI or indeed much of a budget whatsoever — the video was made for around $800,” Van Pelt said. ” Much toxic by-products were inhaled and minor burns were occasionally suffered, but we can say with pride that the result exceeded our own expectations.”

“Raw Spectacle” was directed by Emily Kai Bock (Grimes’ upcoming “Oblivion”). “I wanted to make a surreal narrative video using graham as the lead character,” Kai Bock told us. “I had been watching a lot of ‘X-Files’ and had finished a short doc on ex-prisoners integrating into community at the time — so I had these themes of outcasts and aliens on my mind.”

Those are actually Van Pelt’s hands on fire in a bath tub, which by the way appears to be one of the few non-illegal locations the video was shot in. “Guerrilla style… get in, get the shot, and get out,” Kai Bock confided. “The pyrotechnics were real, we didn’t do any visual effects – It was more fun that way. Both Graham and I suffered one minor burn each and Neal, our DP smashed a lens after tripping while running down the smoke-filled train tunnel. It was sorta insane, but a huge blast.”
