“X-Men: First Class” studio wants Matthew Vaughn back for sequel

Fox CEO says studio is waiting on a script for "X-Men: First Class" sequel, but plans to bring Matthew Vaughn back for follow-up film.

Even though “X-Men: First Class” fell short of expectations at the box office, the film received quite a bit of praise from critics and fans alike for its clever reinvention of Marvel’s mutant movie franchise. That’s why it’s nice to hear that 20th Century Fox is looking to bring “First Class” director Matthew Vaughn back for the sequel.

There’s no release date set for the “X-Men: First Class” sequel at this point, but 20th Century Fox Chairman and CEO Tom Rothman told ComingSoon.net that the studio is optimistic that Vaughn will be behind the camera for the project. Asked about “First Class” and their other recent, big-budget release, “Rise of the Planet of the Apes,” Rothman said the studio is currently waiting on scripts for the sequels.

“Both of them were really great scripts and so we have to be sure to get great scripts again,” he said. “We’re working hard on the scripts for both of them, but we have every hope of moving forward with [Vaughn and 'Apes' director Rupert Wyatt].”

Rothman’s comments echo those of “X-Men: First Class” producer Lauren Shuler Donner, who stated back in September that the plan was to bring Vaughn back for another round with Charles Xavier and the rest of the Marvel mutants.

Given the final moments of “First Class,” however, it will be interesting to see what direction the studio plans to go with the franchise, and whether the next installment of the series will find its critical acclaim matched by box-office returns.
