“Harry Potter” e-books delayed until 2012
Author J.K. Rowling will instead focus on the launch of Pottermore.com.
The Boy Wizard is going to have to wait a little bit longer to learn what an e-book is. The release of the “Harry Potter” book series in electronic format was supposed to occur on the Pottermore website this month at the same time that Pottermore switched from beta to open-to-the-public, AP reports. However, turns out the Boy Who Lived will have to wait another year until he lives in an electronic format.
“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” the last of the seven “Harry Potter” books, was released back in 2007, but none of J.K. Rowling’s novels have been distributed as e-books. Rowling decided that she would sell the e-books and digital audio books through her own site instead of going the traditional route and selling them through booksellers and Amazon.com. They’ll still be compatible with popular e-readers like the Kindle, the Reader and the iPad, but they will only be available through the Pottermore store.
Rowling certainly waited until the last minute to announce that she was pushing back the release date of the “Harry Potter” e-books. A blog post on the Pottermore website implied that the decision to push back the release of the e-books was an attempt to spend more time focusing on the launch of Pottermore.
“The Pottermore Shop, which will sell the Harry Potter eBooks and digital audio books, will now open in the first half of 2012, in order to allow us to focus on our first priority: opening Pottermore to as many people as possible and making the experience as good as it can be,” it said.
Fan better snap up the e-books while they’re available, because there’s no telling if Rowling will only make them available for a limited time like Warner Bros is doing with the “Harry Potter” DVDs.
