Young The Giant Shakes Up The IFC Crossroads House

Nothing can stop Young The Giant from dancing -- or from making you shake it.

One thing you can’t take away from Young The Giant, is their commitment to the sport of rock. During a spirited set from their self-titled debut album at the IFC Crossroads House yesterday afternoon, the quintet danced their pants off while delivering their raucous indie rock, deftly maneuvering around guitar wires and each other, to keep their stage party in full effect. Lead singer Sameer Gadhia, even belted his way to a nosebleed — and kept on going. His perseverance was especially fitting as he sang/shouted into the microphone, the chorus of the band’s hit, “My Body,” intoning, “My body tells me no, but I won’t quit, cause I want more.” This band is in it for the win.

The songs from this California group’s album are imminently catchy – music for toe tapping and full body-bouncing. “I Got” opens with the sunny strumming of an acoustic guitar, and breaks into a chorus of pulsing drums, and “Cough Syrup” begins with a spare, Beatles-like chord progression and unfolds into a sprawling landscape of percussive electric riffs. You can’t help but shake to the sounds. And when Gadhia crashes his tambourine against the drum set cymbals, or wields his orange-shaped (as in the fruit) maraca, you are simply required to join in the celebration.
