Alamo Drafthouse

While SXSW will take over many of Alamo’s screens in March, the Drafthouse has something to appeal to all the senses this spring with a collection of cool events for Austin audiences to enjoy. If you’re merely looking to catch a movie at the Downtown Ritz, there’s the always reliable Terror Tuesdays and Weird Wednesdays to enjoy, not to mention one-off screenings of “Bad Boys II” (Feb. 21), the schlocky “Birdemic: Shock & Terror” (March 2, with the filmmakers in attendance), “Ma Vie En Rose” (Feb. 23), the Girlie Night feature “Now and Then” (March 9), “Annie” (March 23), and extended runs of “Spike & Mike’s Sick & Twisted Festival of Animation” (Feb. 26-March 4), the improv doc “Trust Us, This is All Made Up” (March 8, 10), and “The Road Warrior” (April 4-7).

However, the Alamo is also offering the opportunity for audience participation with
quote-alongs every Wednesday at the Alamo Village and Thursday at the Downtown Ritz of “Pee Wee’s Big Adventure” (Feb. 24-March 25), “The Wedding Singer” (March 31-April 15) and “The 40 Year Old Virgin” (starting April 22). The Alamo will also let audiences get in on the action with a March 21st screening of “Batman and Robin” in Hecklevision. But if you only want to hear others talking back at the screen, albeit in hilarious diatribes, Master Pancake will have you covered as they offer their takes on “Goldfinger” (every weekend between March 5-19) and “Braveheart” (starting on March 25).

Meanwhile, the Alamo’s cuisine will be at the center of a trio of events consisting of the South Lamar’s Red Carpet Feast on Oscar night on March 7th (with viewing parties also at the Ritz and Village), the “Good Burger” burger party on April 6th and “The Indiana Jones Trilogy Feast” on April 11th. And the Drafthouse will please the ears with Music Mondays at the Ritz with “Soul Power” (Feb. 22), the Neil Young concert film “Rust Never Sleeps” (March 1), the Bill Withers doc “Still Bill” (March 8) and “Trimpin: The Sound of Invention” (March 22), as well as live performances from the Invincible Czars accompanying Tod Browning’s 1927 silent “The Unknown” (Feb. 28) and the Tosca String Quartet & Golden Hornet Project (April 26-27).

Last, but certainly not least, Drafthouse programmers Lars Nielsen and Zack Carlson are bringing two special evenings to the Ritz, the first being Tommy Swenson’s “Viva VHS,” an ode to the now-bygone era of the video cassette on February 24th, and “Let The Reel One In” on April 7th.
