The Yes Pleases

Here's a band that I'll bet my (useless) diploma on you have not yet heard of, and given the general preoccupation with driveling songs about umbrellas and some guy called Lady Gaga maybe you'll find refreshing! The Yes Pleases hail from the once mighty town of Seattle, remember that place? This fledgling unsigned foursome cram a 90's load of sound onto their debut, From Whence It Came, but they aren't recycling Pavement and Guided By Voices riffs in a garage. Even if they were, I might be interested, but the songs that found their way to my inbox have their own thing going on as they draw on the familiar. The first track on From Whence it Came, "Designer," sounds like a Ween tune that got left off of Chocolate and Cheese, though It could use a bit more nitrous oxide. Here’s a band that I’ll bet my (useless) diploma on you have not yet heard of, and given the general preoccupation with driveling songs about umbrellas and some guy called Lady Gaga maybe you’ll find refreshing! The Yes Pleases hail from the once mighty town of Seattle, remember that place?

This fledgling unsigned foursome cram a 90′s load of sound onto their debut, From Whence It Came, but they aren’t recycling Pavement and Guided By Voices riffs in a garage. Even if they were, I might be interested, but the songs that found their way to my inbox have their own thing going on as they draw on the familiar.

The first track on From Whence it Came, “Designer,” sounds like a Ween tune that got left off of Chocolate and Cheese, though It could use a bit more nitrous oxide. The second track, “70%” sounds like a completely different band, which is actually a bit Weenish of them again, but the comparisons stop there. It’s a rare song that strums so coolly yet recalls the vocal sensibilities of Freddie Mercury, a flamboyant croon washed in a slacker rock anthem.

Seriously, young Freddie Mercury.
