Fall Preview: Repertory Calendar

A guide to what's worth watching in the repertory theaters of New York, Los Angeles and Austin.
This fall, the Alamo Drafthouse is all about Fantastic Fest (Sept. 24-Oct. 1), which will inhabit the Alamo South Lamar and feature a much-anticipated retrospective of Spanish horror legend Jess Franco, among other events and premieres — the opening night film will be “Napoleon Dynamite” director Jared Hess’ latest “Gentleman Broncos.” (It’s worth mentioning that owner Tim League’s other movie marathon — the 24-hour Cinemapocalypse, where new films including “Inglourious Basterds” and vintage films mix on September 15th — is already sold out.) However, if you’re around Austin in the next few months outside of Fantastic Fest, there are still plenty of other screenings worth your while. Over at the Alamo Ritz, live scores will accompany screenings of 1927′s “The Unknown” (Sept. 6), the Ritz’s 80th birthday presentation of 1929′s “Piccadilly” (Oct. 11), and 1925′s “Phantom of the Opera” (Oct. 31). You also will be able to catch screenings of “Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown” (Aug. 11), “Milton Glaser: To Inform & Delight” (Aug. 12), “The Dirty Dozen” (Aug. 16, 17 & 19), “Drop Dead Gorgeous” (Aug. 18), Jim Jarmusch’s “Dead Man” (Sept. 6 &
and Alejandro Jorodowsky’s “Holy Mountain” (Sept. 20, 21 & 22). Over at the Alamo South Lamar, the Texas Filmmakers’ Production Fund will host screenings of So Yong Kim’s “Treeless Mountain” and Sam Green’s doc “The Weather Underground” on August 12th with the filmmakers in attendance. And equally notable are Alamo Ritz runs of docs “Nollywood Babylon” (Aug. 9-11) and “Second Skin” (Aug. 17).
Ongoing series at the Alamo Ritz include Music Mondays with Bela Fleck’s “Throw Your Heart Down” (Aug. 10), “From Dusty With Love” (Aug. 17), “Downtown 81″ (Aug. 24), and “Rock ‘N’ Roll Tokyo” (Aug. 31); Terror Tuesdays with a Bob Clark tribute screening of “Deathdream” (Aug. 4), “Killer Klowns from Outer Space” (Aug. 11), “Kingdom of the Spiders” (Aug. 18), “976-EVIL” (Aug. 25), “Hausu” (Sept. 29), “Halloween III” (Oct. 27); Weird Wednesdays with “The Muthers” (Aug. 5), “Snake in the Eagle’s Shadow” (Aug. 12), “Lady Terminator” (Aug. 19), “Unholy Rollers” (Oct. 7), “Masque of the Red Death” (Oct. 21); and quote-alongs for “This is Spinal Tap” (Aug. 6, 13, & 20) and “Office Space” (Sept. 17 & 24).
