The rise of the film critic filmmaker
Bruno Kirby, 1949-2006.
Character actor and perpetual Billy Crystal best friend Bruno Kirby died on Monday from complications related to leukemia. Kirby appeared in many acclaimed films in his lifetime, playing young Pete Clemenza in "The Godfather: Part II," drummer Tommy Pischedda in "This Is Spinal Tap" and 2nd Lt. Steven Hauk in "Good Morning, Vietnam." But we know and love him best from his two films playing second banana to Crystal — as Jess in "When Harry Met Sally," memorably clicking with Carrie Fisher's Marie when they're supposed to be on dates with the other people at the table; and as the aggressively mustachioed Ed Furillo in "City Slickers," beating back middle age with brilliant denial and ever-younger girlfriends. We say this with all possible fondness and respect — we mourn your passing, Mr. Kirby, but you will live on on cable TV forever.+ 'City Slickers' actor Bruno Kirby dies (AP)...
