Thank you and President Obama for putting energy efficiency at the forefront of America's clean energy future, with your recent announcement of new lighting standards. As the Department of Energy considers new standards for beverage machines and other appliances to come, I urge you to adopt the strongest achievable standards.
 
Cost savings from more efficient beverage machines can reduce annual emissions of CO2 by more than half a million metric tons a year.
 
All of us can take small actions that lower our home energy costs and help the environment. That's why I'm urging all my friends to join me in becoming a citizen of the United States of Efficiency. You recently said that saving energy is a moral responsibility that will create a better world for our children and grandchildren. As Secretary of Energy, you can lead an energy revolution that will allow us to save money, lower energy costs, fight global warming, and reduce our electricity demand.
 
The truth is that we can't afford not to embrace efficiency. It's the fastest, cheapest and cleanest source of new energy. Adopting the strongest achievable efficiency standards will help us start saving energy and money  as soon as possible. In the words of President Obama, when he directed DOE to act quickly on efficiency standards: "Inaction is not an option that is acceptable to the American people."
