Awards and Oscars, 2/16.

Red Cliff

"John Woo's historical war epic 'Red Cliff,' about a battle among warlords in 3rd century China, received 15 nominations - out of 19 categories - for the 2009 Hong Kong Film Awards, including best picture and best actor (Tony Leung)," reports Irene Young, who's got the full list at the Alternative Film Guide. "'Red Cliff,' by the way, is also up for an Asian Film Award for best picture, while Woo himself managed to get a best director nod."

"With six wins, Steve McQueen's 'Hunger' was the big winner at the 2009 Irish Academy Awards." Deborah Arthur lists the nominees and winners at the AFG. Related: Peter Bowen talks with McQueen for Filmmaker.

In the US, the guilds were busy handing out awards this weekend. At the AFG, Deborah Arthur lists the nominees and winners of the 2009 American Society of Cinematographers Awards, while at Movie City News, you can click back to review winners in previous years. Anthony Dod Mantle, who shot "Slumdog Millionaire," is the ASC's final answer.

Deborah Arthur also has the nominees and winners of the American Cinema Editors's Eddie Awards (again, MCN has previous winners). The big three: Chris Dickens for "Slumdog," Stephen Schaffer for "WALL•E" and Jinx Godfrey for "Man on Wire."

On Saturday, the Art Directors Guild honored production designers Donald Graham Burt ("The Curious Case of Benjamin Button"), Nathan Crowley ("The Dark Knight") and Mark Digby ("Slumdog"). Once again, turn to Deborah Arthur for the full lists.

Here, too. The Cinema Audio Society goes for "Slumdog" as well.

Oscar predictions will likely be coming at us fast and furious all this week, leading up to Sunday night. Today's roundup: Stephen Colbert (that's an online viewing tip, of course), Edward Copeland, Nick Davis, Nathaniel R and Andre Soares.

James van Maanen interviews Megan Mylan, whose short doc "Smile Pinki" has been nominated for an Oscar.

Jonathan Romney talks with Laurent Cantet about "The Class" in the Independent.

Ramin Setoodeh interviews Harvey Weinstein for Newsweek.

At Moving Image Source, David Schwartz talks with cinematographer Maryse Alberti about shooting "The Wrestler." She's not nominated for an Oscar, but she is nominated for a Spirit Award.

Meanwhile, PopMatters is spending the week listing the "100 Essential Female Film Performances." That would be of all time, of course, not just this year.
