SXSW and IFC Festival Direct.

Filmmaker: Sundance 2009

"At a Sundance press breakfast this morning IFC Films announced a partnership with SXSW in which five films screening at the festival will be available simultaneously on IFC's on-demand platform," reports Scott Macaulay. "The films include Joe Swanberg's premiering 'Alexander the Last' as well as our Filmmaker mag cover film 'Medicine for Melancholy,' which will return to the festival for a special screening. Attending the event was Steven Soderbergh, who spoke about independent filmmakers' need to 'let go of the fantasy' that their film will receive a conventional theatrical release in this tough climate."

The other three titles, by the way, are Javor Gardev's "Zift" and Matthew Newton's "Three Blind Mice," new to SXSW; and Joe Maggio's "Paper Covers Rock."

IndieWIRE's Eugene Hernandez has more details and many, many more titles lined up for IFC Festival Direct; and Ray Pride has the press release, where you'll spot names such as Denys Arcand, Philippe Garrel, Amos Gitai, François Ozon, Hong Sang-soo, Béla Tarr and Olivier Assayas.

Blogging for the New York Times, Michael Cieply comments on this morning's announcement and the discussion that's ensued.

Acknowledged: 1) The Daily's an IFC blog, obviously; and 2) that Filmmaker cover is shamelessly nabbed from Sujewa Ekanayake.
