Berlinale. Panorama, round 1.

Berlinale

The Berlinale's unveiled the first round of 21 films in the Panorama program, which'll eventually boast around 50. While the emphasis is on discoveries, you'll recognize at least a few of the names behind the titles and you may well have been following one or two of the productions. It's in this program, for example, that Julie Delpy's "The Countess," starring herself, William Hurt, Daniel Brühl and Anamaria Marinca ("4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days"), will make its world premiere.

And, plucking a line from the press release, "José Padilha, winner of the Golden Bear in 2008 for "Tropa de elite" ("The Elite Squad"), will present his documentary "Garapa," a work that radically addresses the issue of global hunger."

Another title of potential interest is Monika Treut's new feature, "Ghosted," described by Hyena Films as a "suspenseful story of an unusual love affair between two cultures and two cities," Hamburg and Taipei.

Again, here's that press release with all 21 titles.

Gosh almighty, where does the time go? Here comes the Berlinale! Looking forward to your coverage, David, and to this year's bumper crop of films.

A quick glance at the list of 21 makes me think it's going to be a emotional downer of a Panorama this year. Hoorah!

As for the list of three above -- well, I wish I could say I was more excited. The Countess can't be any worse than 2 Days in Paris, can it? As for Padilha, well....we all know how I felt about his win last year.

As for Monika Treut, that could be interesting. I haven't seen any of her work since My Father is Coming back in '91.
