Goings and Comings

Sad news x 2 for the comedy community: 1. Beloved Boston comic Kevin Knox passed away after a long battle with cancer. 2. Ken Ober - known to many as host of MTV's Remote Control - also moved on. In other ha ha news... The Mighty Boosh will interview and praise Monty Python. Both have been featured here. Coincidence? Probably... The Colbert Report writers talk shop at...

You read it, while I figure out how to take the big words out of my act... Twitter user 'Shit My Dad Says' gets CBS deal Only one day after my piece on "TV Writing for the Internet Age?" Interesting... Comedy Central is developing a channel... in Abu Dhabi This should be good. The region is developing culturally, but what are the content barriers going to be? Will the folks from the Arab-American Comedy Festival be looped in? George Carlin's Last Words is out. Co-written with my friend Tony Hendra. Buy it. It's better than Sarah Palin's book. The 2009 ECNY Award nominations are open It's not the Oscars, the Edinburgh Comedy Awards (nee, Perriers), nor even the Golden Globes... but it's...

Panel Review - TV Writing in the Internet Age

The New York Comedy Festival event I thought had the most "Details Are Sketchy" potential was Keeping It Fresh: Television Writing In The Internet Age. After a fun video highlight of their work, the moderator - the NY Times' Virginia Heffernan...

Video Friday - Travel Delayed

Ugh. (Unnamed Airline) sucks. Won't bore you with details of another wayward trip through hell, but there's no way a 90 minute flight from Milwaukee to NYC should including boarding, deplaning, bad information, a trip through Cincinnati, and b.o. that is not from this Earth. So, just like me, video Friday was delayed... until now. When I find solace in watching videos about airline travel. Yes, airplane jokes are as old as airplanes themselves, but just sit back, think of all the times you've been screwed, and enjoy.
Milwaukee Ha Ha?

No, really. I am in Milwaukee for a couple days. Performing at Marquette and UW Oshkosh. I got to thinking... Besides Laverne & Shirley, most seasons of the Brewers (especially the Red Necks and Jeffrey Leonard years), and the accents, what's so funny about Milwaukee? This site gives me some comedy around. There are a couple clubs, some improv, some sketch groups... but is there anything amazing here? Who's "come out of" Milwaukee? This type of town has got to produce some under-the-radar gems, so who are they? And, furthermore, let's maybe start a little breakdown of comedy cities in the USA. In fact, this Milwaukee trip has just inspired me to do so. I'm gonna give it an off-the-cuff stab below, but I want to create a good list of comedy cities, with stuff like history and opportunity and industry and support, etc. etc. etc. So, when you're done...

The Times, It Is A-Laughing

I tend to keep an eye on the MSM coverage of comedy. Having been exposed the UK comedy scene - where the big papers and the BBC routinely include comedy and comedians as major cultural forces - I'm curious to see what happens here. The intrusion of the Stewart-Colbert-Maher line into tradition media's role as information provider, the rise of comedy coverage and content online, the steady flow of laid off "real job" holders into the comedy ranks... all must be adding pressure to newsrooms to at least take a look into the ha-ha arts. The New York Times, for one, seems to have gotten it's comedy groove on recently. David Itzkoff always drops some nice comedy coverage, and there was the recent article about comedians in Queens (including yours truly), but this past weekend the paper landed a surprise 1-2-3-4 punch of comedy pieces: Nick Swardson Talks About His...

Making a Mess... On Stage

I was at a show last night with Elephant Larry. Very funny group. They made a mess on stage. Crumbled, mashed in cookies, cream, cupcakes, mush, goo, crumbs everywhere. I've seen The Apple Sisters routinely spray corn, melon, and water everywhere. I caught New Excitement dumping coffee, spit, blood, and food all over their play space, too. Those are just a few of the sketch groups that routinely make a mess on stage. My questions for you are: - What other groups do that regularly? (Answers including "Gallagher" or "Gallagher 2" will result in disqualification... from life). - Do you like? - For an audience, does it enhance the experience, detract from it, make you feel uncomfortably frightened, or draw you into a silly world of play where anything is possible ("Let the wild rumpus... get messy!")? - As performers, does making a mess provide an extra sense of ownership,...

News! Antennae On The Move!

Arrested Development is back on the air. Where it belongs... while we wait for the movie. On the other hand, The Jeff Dunham Show broke Comedy Central's record for a series debut. I realize everyone has different tastes, and not everyone knew how great Chappelle was before his show hit, and Jeff Dunham is undeniably talented and funny and hard-working... but... really? The stereotype enhancing show is that popular? Guess it's Mencia with a puppet. The New York Comedy Festival hits town next week. While mostly stand-up - and great stand-up at that - there are some solid events for sketch fans, including and especially the Andy Kaufman Award. NBC ordered up the rest of the season Community and Parks & Rec. Like Community, good stuff, well-cast, solid writing, tightly made. Parks & Rec hasn't yet done it for me. I want to like it, but, well, that may be...
