It was a very good year

By Jeff Kreisler on 12/30/2009

Been hearing a lot of Sinatra lately (stupid holidays), so forgive the post title and the personal note it introduces... 2009 was, indeed, a very good year here at Details Are Sketchy. We started in May with grand ambitions, and I think we've accomplished a lot so far: Monty Python, Mighty Boosh, SketchfestNYC, Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Arab-American Festival, reviews, travels, discussions about sketch and improv and stand up and TV and film and "the industry" and more... all while juggling publication of my first book and comedy tours and all the madness of life. We're taking a little break as... MORE »

What Changed Comedy This Decade?

By Jeff Kreisler on 12/30/2009

In researching the sketches of the decade, and reading through the recaps of the last 10 years in various fields, I started to wonder which developments decade most affected the art and practice of comedy. That, my friends, is how blog ideas are born. Here is my toddler: The Election of 2000 Made political humor easier and more accessible. The absurdity of politics - always known to those who studied it - could no longer be hidden. (The winner is chosen by a court on which sit judges his father appointed, after a recount in a state where his brother... MORE »

Sketches of the Decade... ish

By Jeff Kreisler on 12/29/2009

Alright, my plan to find the 'best sketches of the 2000s' was a bit too ambitious. Are we talkin' about live sketches, those on broadcast TV, cable TV? What about just online? Musical parodies? Animation? Scenes from a show or stand-alone? Stand up clips? On stage taping? I watched a lot of videos - good for me, bad for deadlines - and came to no conclusion. Perhaps that reflects the nature of comedy, a beast which cannot be defined (though, you'd think a "beast" would have a much more frightening trait than "lack of definition"). So, here, somewhat unsatisfactorily, are... MORE »

Sketchy Predictions for 2010

By Jeff Kreisler on 12/23/2009

My friend Sean over at thecomicscomic asked me for some predictions for 2010. He hasn't gotten around to posting them yet (you're as lazy as I am!), so, I'll give you a wee preview, at least of my contributions (he's polling a bunch of comedy types). Take a gander, tell me what you think, and check out thecomicscomic some time this month for his compilation. Ten for 2010: - Girls will be girls, boys will be boys, and a popular singer will be both - Sarah Palin will claim that the Sun rotates around the Earth, and will do so... MORE »

Where Has The Month Gone?

December. A time for drinking and singing and gifting and shivering and hiding from in-laws. Check, check, check, check, aaaaand, check. But I've missed so much comedy news, with my undercover cold musical present drinks... So, let's catch up on at least the few things of sketchy interest... The WGA East has signed iLarious. Jokes written for apps such as "This Just In" now count toward guild minimums when qualifying for pension and health benefits. (Per Cynopsis). Huge. Just a matter of time until I can get a CAT Scan for posting a knock-knock joke. Comedy Central is developing more... MORE »

San Francisco Sketchfest Looms... Yay!

By Jeff Kreisler on 12/16/2009

Regular readers of Details Are Sketchy know that I really dig on the SF Sketchfest. Profiled it earlier this year, have performed in it, really like the folks who run it and how they run it. At the moment, I think it's the best sketch comedy festival in the world (apologies SketchfestNYC... love you, too, but you're not there yet). Plus, even though the SF Sketchfest remains focused on sketch, it's expanded beyond that to become a full-service comedy festival, one that slams it's funny little finger on the pulse of comedy. It may even be the best comedy... MORE »

Sketchy Gift Ideas

By Jeff Kreisler on 12/15/2009

As much as I like to be a Grinch, I do enjoy presents. Both giving and receiving. Laughter's a great gift, though I've found the wife doesn't accept jokes in December any more than she does in the other months. Here then, is a completely unofficial and unassuming Details Are Sketchy list of the best gifts for the comedy fan in your life. They don't have to know they're a comedy fan (a "funny-phile"?), but if they're smart, thoughtful, and full of life - while questioning life - then, trust me, they're a fan of comedy. Note: I link to... MORE »
