Irony?

Another "This Film Is Not Yet Rated" note (and apologies for all of the in-house messaging):

As A.O. Scott correctly notes in his review of the film

When [Kirby] Dick submitted a cut of this film, it was slapped with an NC-17, an unsurprising outcome that led to some hilarious, Kafkaesque telephone conversations between him and Joan Graves, the chairwoman of the ratings board. IFC Films, which is not owned by a major studio and therefore not required to submit its releases to the association, is distributing the film without a rating.

The MPAA still has that initial rating of an incomplete cut of the film on file, however, so there are quite a few reviews out there (Onion AV Club, we're looking at you) that designate the film NC-17. It is indeed being released without a rating — we'd be fucked when it came to advertising the film otherwise (as it is, there were fears that ads would be pulled because of the mistake). Clerical error? Or MASSIVE MPAA CONSPIRACY? Or...well, clerical error. You decide.
