"That's a major appliance, that's not a name!" According to Jen Chaney at the Washington Post, the implicit promise of the title of the just-released "Pretty in Pink: Everything's Duckie Edition" DVD is just a tease. It doesn't contain the legendary original conclusion of the Molly Ringwald staple, in which Ringwald ditches Andrew McCarthy for Jon Cryer's quirky Duckie, and they dance to David Bowie's "Heroes." Test audiences wouldn't have it, and they reshot the finale so that she ended up with the droopy rich kid. Ah, the 80s. The disk does apparently come with "The Lost Dance," a featurette on the whole debacle:

"The Lost Dance" shares some interesting details about the controversial reshoot, including the fact that Ringwald was opposed to the Duckie ending, too. "Once they cast Jon and we started working together, I thought 'There's no way this ending will work,'" she says. "It seemed like I was ending up with my brother."

Mandi Bierly interviews Cryer at Entertainment Weekly, and there's all kinds of goodness:

What did you think of Andie's prom dress? It was, aesthetically speaking, quite controversial.
I think the costume designer was trying to transcend the era. I think had she done the ultimate '80s dress, it would have ended up being a joke. So she tried to do something very sort of French... and baggy. It is what it is. I think it's very lovely.

Q. Your post-"[Pee-wee's] Playhouse" resume includes an Emmy-nominated guest arc on "Murphy Brown," an active voice-over career and a couple of current big-screen roles ("The Tripper," "Reno 911!: Miami"). Any chance we'll see more of Pee-wee?

A. There are two Pee-wee scripts for movies. The one that looks like it's getting made first [takes place] almost completely outside of the playhouse. The King of Cartoons disappears, so it's an epic adventure story. It will be very funny just to see those characters out of the playhouse. A lot of them are a little on the clunky side. The idea of Chairry leaving the playhouse to go on a road trip, that's part of what I think is funny. We hope to start shooting early next year.
