TFINYR: A note.
By Alison Willmore on 08/31/2006
If you've ever wondered about the corporate structure of IFC (and we're sure there's at least none of you out there who have), IFC the network and IFC Films are fairly separate. IFC Films buys or produces films to distribute theatrically; IFC licenses films to show on air, and, in a more recent development, produces its own original series and documentaries.
We only bring it up because Kirby Dick's "This Film Is Not Yet Rated," which opens in New York and LA tomorrow, was originally produced to air on IFC (its network premiere has been pushed back to early next year). Like Rosie Perez's "Yo soy Boricua, pa'que tu lo sepas!" and Lisa Ades and Lesli Klainberg's "Fabulous! The Story of Queer Cinema," it was intended for festival rounds and a prominent premiere on the channel. After the film's reception at Sundance and everything that followed, "TFINYR" has become what could unofficially be considered the first IFC theatrical release.
And we have no particular point to make except to note that it's like Christmas morning here at the office, with everyone all a-twitter as the reviews trickle in.
