My Favorite Blog Posting of The Week...

By Jim Shearer on 04/24/2009

You'd think that after writing a daily blog, the last thing I'd want to do with my spare time is read someone else's blog, but--hey--call me a glutton for punishment (a blogaholic if you will). MORE »

A Flying W in a Haystack

By Jim Shearer on 04/06/2009

Friday was a bummer. Not only was my weekend flight to Pittsburgh delayed, but it was cancelled altogether--grrrrr. Instead of arriving in the 'burgh at 8:30PM that evening (to attend various family functions for my sister's upcoming wedding), I was told the soonest I could get in was 5:30PM the following day via a connecting flight from Washington DC--grrrrr. Favorite Song, Album, and Video of 2009 (So Far)

By Jim Shearer on 03/26/2009

Whew, 2009 is just flying by, huh? We're already one-fourth of the way through the year. If this were a football game it'd be time to switch ends and start the second quarter. Because I like to get a jumpstart on things, I've already begun compiling my best-of categories for 2009. If the year ended today (which barring a freakish miracle, is not going to happen), here's how my favorites would stack up: MORE »

A Potpourri Post of Musical Goodness

By Sarah Pesin on 02/03/2009

I'm a hustla baby (I just want you to know), but I don't hustle women, I hustle music. I've finally come to accept that I'm one of those annoying people who pushes music on friends, whether they want to hear it or not. (left: You will be a fan of Mystery Jets whether you like it or not.) So I figured, why not spread it to the masses instead of a few (unlucky) friends of mine. Consider this a potpourri post as some of the artists and albums below are new, and some have been out for a while... MORE »

The Morning Benders Hit The Road

By Jim Shearer on 01/29/2009
Filed under: FREE SONGS, ME LIKEY, SOON

Today--in what I'm calling the Feel-Good-Tour-Of-The-Year-Thus-Far--The Morning Benders kickoff their co-headlining tour with The Submarines. If you're not familiar with The Submarines by now, I can give you my standard spiel: You know, the band that has a song in that one iTunes commercial. (left: Hopefully this won't happen out on tour.) The Morning Benders are also set to play SXSW. They are confirmed for two performances, but because a band ain't a band unless they play 12 or more shows down in Austin, I'm sure more will follow. To get friendly with their tour mates The Morning Benders... MORE »

ME LIKEY: Christmas With Weezer

By Jim Shearer on 12/17/2008

For those of you who are tired of throwing non-Christmas Weezer songs ("Holiday," "The Greatest Man That Ever Lived") on your yearly holiday mixes, or if you don't want to recycle "The Christmas Song" or "Christmas Celebration" (the two songs Weezer released in 2000 as a special 2-track EP), you'll be happy to know that the band made available yesterday, their 6-song song Christmas With Weezer EP that was originally recorded for the Tap Tap Revenge iPhone game. (left: First the Red Album, than this? What a Weezer-iffic year it's been!) I know it was just yesterday when I... MORE »

ME LIKEY: Robert Bobbert & The Bubble Machine

By Jim Shearer on 12/03/2008

It makes perfectly, perfectly, perfectly good sense that Robert Schneider of The Apples In Stereo has just announced that he will be releasing a children's album early next year on February 17, 2009. Schneider is among one of the most positive and bubbly people I have ever met in my life. If you close your eyes, and just listen to him talk, you might even think he was a kid. Schneider, who apparently tested out some of the material on his son Max, will take the persona of inventor/scientist character Robert Bobbert, and his album will be appropriately titled... MORE »

ME LIKEY: Ra Ra Riot

This weekend Ra Ra Riot will be in Coney Island playing the Siren Fest, next weekend they'll be in Chicago playing the Wicker Park Summer Festival, and on August 19 they'll be releasing their debut, The Rhumb Line. Instead of talking about the future, let's chat about the present for a second. Here's a new song, "Dying Is Fine," from their new album. Enjoy! (left: The best thing to come out of Syracuse since the Slocum Heights Posse...sorry Carmelo Anthony). RaRaRiot_DyingIsFine.mp3... MORE »

ME LIKEY: Street Dogs

By Jim Shearer on 06/09/2008
Filed under: ME LIKEY, NEWS, SOON

Just received an advanced copy of the Street Dogs brand new album, State of Grace (no I won't illegally burn it for you). Good stuff! If you don't know, their lead singer, Mike McColgan served in the Gulf War before becoming the founding singer of the Dropkick Murphys in 1996. He left the band in 1998 to pursue his dream of becoming a fire fighter. He served as a Boston fireman until 2002, when he got the itch to play music again. That year he formed Street Dogs. On July 8, McColgan's band will be releasing their fourth studio... MORE »

ME LIKEY: The Ting Tings

By Jim Shearer on 05/30/2008

Even though I just found out that Katie White and Jules De Martino, the duo known as the Ting Tings, had ties in teen pop groups earlier in their career, I still think they're as catchy sin (not saying "sin" is right, but it is catchy if you know what I mean). For any loyal Indie Ear readers, add another duo to my favorite groups of 2008 list (see also: The Kills, The Black Keys, The Bird and The Bee, and the Cool Kids). ME LIKEY: This Is Ivy League

By Rachel Pesin on 04/11/2008

About a week ago I was browsing my favorite online celebrity gossip blog, Oh No They Didn't, when I saw a post about This Is Ivy League. The article said they've been compared to Simon & Garfunkel, Belle & Sebastian, and Peter Bjorn & John--thus my interest was piqued. I went to check out some of their music and, lo and behold, I'd already heard them before but just didn't know it! (left: This is a picture of This Is Ivy League) MORE »

ME LIKEY: Otherkids

By Jim Shearer on 03/31/2008

I'm a fan of all types of music, but there will always be a special place in my heart for garage-punk (especially the stuff inspired by early 80's hardcore). (left: My favorite new, undiscovered, unpolished punk rock group from Maine) Last year I came across this young band on youtube called Otherkids. One of the main reasons I like them (besides the fact that they play a spot-on cover of the Beastie Boys' "Egg Raid On Mojo"), is that that they appear to be a group of high school kids playing vintage-style punk. Pretty amazing, considering most of their... MORE »
