Is something not right about naming a 3D horror movie--whose commercial features a wall of flames bursting from a movie screen towards it's 3D-glass-wearing audience--after a highly influential indie-rock band? (left: Alas there is a "3D" to make a distinction between the two.) CORRECTION: It didn't occur to me until my friend Randy corrected me today that My Bloody Valentine, the highly influential indie-rock band, actually got their name from the 1981 slasher movie, My Bloody Valentine. Turns out My Bloody Valentine 3D is a remake of the original: Toward the end of 1983, Shields and O'Ciosoig formed their... MORE »

...does that "saved by zero" Toyota jingle make you want to stick sharpened pencils in your eyes? The jingle is borrowed from the song, "Saved By Zero," from the 80's new wave group The Fixx. The band's biggest U.S. hit was "One Thing Leads To Another," which like "Saved By Zero," was released off their 1983 album Reach the Beach. (left: Saved by not hearing that f'ing commercial jingle anymore@#!) No disrespect to The Fixx (who by the way still tour) or their fans, but I hate that commercial so much, it's at the point where I will go... MORE »

...does this tote bag design really suck? You'll notice that it's a SXSW 2008 bag, so yes, this rant is probably seven months too late, but while sitting in front of a computer all day in complete solitude, all types of random thoughts will cross one's mind. (left: I'll bet you a quarter YOU could draw better than this.) My wife has always been good about using the free swag I've received over the years, and while blogging yesterday I looked down at the floor and noticed her SXSW tote bag. After looking at it for a couple seconds,... MORE »

...does Christian contemporary rock band, Third Day's, brand new album cover for Revelation look a little Radiohead-esque? P.S. Every Tuesday on the Indie Ear blog, we have a Super Tuesday posting, informing the masses on the latest album releases. Since this week's line-up was a little less than stellar, not even worthy of the preface "super," I opted to pull the plug today. System of a Down's Daron Malakian and John Holmayan released their Serj Tankin-less side project called Scars on Broadway, and 80's pop-rocker, Rick Springfield has a new one out called, Venus In Overdrive. ...was Radiohead making better music videos when they were using basic computer animation ("Paranoid Android") and simple, yet powerful story-telling ("Just," "Karma Police")? Here's the synopsis of Radiohead's brand new video for "House of Cards": In Radiohead's new video for "House of Cards", no cameras or lights were used. Instead, 3D plotting technologies collected information about the shapes and relative distances of objects. The video was created entirely with visualizations of that data. MORE »

Is Mastadon guitarist/vocalist, Brent Hinds (left), moonlighting as Philadelphia Flyers' forward Scott Hartnell (right)? I couldn't get a good picture of Hinds ooing, but I'm telling you, he may have himself a night job in the NHL. If that's the case--and for the sake of music--I hope his team loses their playoff game tonight against the Pittsburgh Penguins, so he can focus solely on Mastodon. MORE »
