"You're So Vain," Carly Simon finally reveals who!

Sort of. One of the greatest mystery's in American music has been the identity of the man in the hit song "You're So Vain" since it's debut in 1972. Who is Carly singing about? People have speculated on which celebrity ex-boyfriend it is for decades. Mick Jagger, Cat Stevens, Kris Kristofferson? Warren Beatty always got my vote.

Well on November 4th Carly went into the WNYC Soundcheck studio and told host John Schaefer that the name was embedded in her new recording of the song... backwards. It's like the good old Beatles LP days! Of course, Schaefer and his crew went and unmasked the mystery man, probably by means more sophisticated but less fun then playing an LP backwards.

And the name is....drum roll.... David. Not Mick, or Warren. So David who? She only says the first name. David Bowie? David Letterman? I was not alive in 1972 so I don't have much of a bearing on the time, nor do I know details about who Carly rolled with back then other than the obvious star bf's. But producer and record colossus David Geffen is a possibility. He helmed Elektra records during the years prior to and during the release of No Secrets , the album on which the song was delivered - I'm sure the irony of it's title has not escaped fans. Rumblings suggest Carly was unhappy wit Geffen's handling of her records, possibly due to his favoring Joni Mitchel at the time.

What do you think? David who?

For a moment I forgot that what I was reading was written by YOU. You're that good, chubi, that good indeed.

David Geffen is gay. Has been out of the closet for years. Surely it isn't him.

David Geffen dated Cher...Did Cher turn him gay??? ha!
. Anyway, Carly Simon wrote this song way before the release date of 1972.........That sort of eliminates quite a few candidates...
But David? hmmm I always thought it was Charles William Donaldson from the UK----the cad! Whoever David is, he has an e and r in his other names.

I also thought it was about Warren. Is she releasing a new album and wanted publicity? I for one prefer the mystery. Perhaps she was referring to Michaelangelo's David. He most certainly was vain.

Geffen, clearly being gay, is at odds with the idea that the song is about a lover, if we take the references at face value. Perhaps "You had me several years ago when I was still quite naive" does not refer to sex. Whoever he is, he's a rich or powerful man, flying Lear jets around and cavorting with "underworld spies."

who the hell cares ? this shows that Carly Simon herself is and always has been so vain.

Um...the only one that makes any sense to me is David Carradine, who lived in Laurel Canyon back in the day, who has an "A", an "E" and an "R" according to what she said on Regis and Kelly a few years ago. He certainly was vain and it doesn't matter anymore because he's no longer with us. I'm sure that she did it this way on purpose, because now people can speculate some more.

it's david geffen. it's her usual play on words. "you had me several years ago" would be her as a new recording artist. then the reference to "some underworld spy" -- could be man or woman -- "or the wife of a close friend" -- meaning he could have gone both ways then????? or she didn't know which way he leaned, or it was a mix of geffen and beatty, mick jagger, or one of her other elitist boyfriends. but she is noted for her play on words and david geffen makes perfect sense. the song could mix both with a boyfriend or somebody like a record producer she felt beholden to. she was with elektra records. "you said that we made such a pretty pair and that you would never leave" could be him saying "stick with me and we'll go places with your talent" and then he dumped her or she felt slighted somehow. i think it also is about other men she's known in her life but david geffen was the main focal point of the song. even the reference to "you think this song is about you" i think makes reference to her singing and recording career, and geffen would be right in the thick of it. nice catch for you guys with playing the song backwards. she has also said that if she told who it was that nobody would care. that makes sense too. how many people really know who david geffen is?

Sergei, are you suggesting that gays are not vain? Really?
