The Amen Break.
By Brandon Kim on 08/20/2009
Filed under: Here comes the gravy!Last week I mentioned the Amen break in reference to an N.W.A tune that is gratuitously set to it and thought I should pause and devote a minute to this drum break turned ubiquitous sample. Everyone knows it, at least unconsciously, but few know where this six seconds of recorded infamy comes from. It's been all over the place since the late 80's when gangster rappers like N.W.A. sampled it, to the corporate advertising campaigns of today.
(Warning: a hot break is dangerous to your record collection.
Beyond just forming the basis to many songs and ads, this six second drum break basically spawned entire subgenres of music. This fascinating musical/pop culture phenomenon has it's beginnings 40 years ago on the b-side of a single from 1969 by The Winstons. The song was called, "Amen Brother."
Since I'm rushing around between ear related appointments, I'm gonna keep this short and sweet, let my guy Nate Harrison, drop this to you.
