SXSW: The British Are Coming

British.jpg

The best four days of the year, aka South by South West (SXSW), will soon be upon us. For an Anglophile like me, SXSW is all about seeing as many bands from the UK and Ireland as possible. I feel it is my duty to tell the world about some of the great bands coming from across the pond.

LOOK SEE PROOF
My #1 must see is Look See Proof, from Hertfordshire, just outside of London. Their songs are fast, catchy, and anthemic. I can already see myself jumping up and down like a maniac at their gig, and I can't wait. Their official evening showcase is on Saturday, March 15 at 11:00 p.m. at Wave Rooftop (408 E 6th St).

THE WOMBATS
At last year's SXSW, I missed all of The Wombats' gigs because I was busy stalking another band from the UK, The Fratellis. Since then, I've really gotten into The Wombats' music. It's incredibly fun, catchy, poppy, and upbeat, and they've got funny lyrics to boot. If you're looking for good music and a few laughs, I suggest you catch their show. Their official evening showcase is on Thursday, March 13 at 1:00 a.m. at Maggie Mae's Rooftop (323 E. 6th St).

ABERFELDY
I've loved Edinburgh's Aberfeldy ever since I heard their adorable love song, "Love is an Arrow," in 2004, but have never had the chance to see them live. Their music is really cutesy and twee, so if you're not into that, I'd steer clear of their shows, but you'll be missing out on a good time. Plus they're Scottish, and Scots have the best accents. Their official evening showcase is on Wednesday, March 12 at 11:00 p.m. at Ninety Proof Lounge (333 E. 2nd St).

DELORENTOS
I saw Dublin's Delorentos in London a zillion years ago, fell in love, and never heard from them again. Until now. Their music is just lovely. Their slower songs are perfect for warm, lazy days. Their quicker-paced songs have great dance beats underlying the singer's laidback vocals, so you'll find yourself tapping your toes and moving your head even though the music is pretty mellow. Their official evening showcase is on Wednesday, March 12 at 12:00 a.m. at Ninety Proof Lounge (333 E. 2nd St).

THE WHIP
Finally, I can't wait to dance, dance, dance when I see The Whip. They're from Manchester and it's clear that the city's music history is ingrained in their sound. Their music is dark, synthy, and easy to dance to. I bet they'll even be able to get the music industry folk to unfold their arms and move around. Their official evening showcase is on Thursday, March 13 at 12:45 a.m. at Club de Ville (900 Red River St).
