The Vice Guide to Coffin Joe. 06/11/2009
VBS.TV sits down for a long chat with Brazil's reigning cult filmmaker José Mojica Marins, aka Coffin Joe, who offers an origin story of sorts about how his first brush with cinema involved a film about STDs: "I screamed and screamed, and that image never left my head. I think this scarred my childhood. So in all my horror films, I try to recreate, through the hell and purgatory that I filmed, but I never managed to portray the biggest horror of my life, a vagina full of gonorrhea." Here's part one of the video and part two....
Best films to jam to before heading to the Caribbean (Pt. 2) 07/02/2009
Wes Craven's "The Serpent and the Rainbow" is easily one of the most freaked out films of the 80's. If that's too bold a statement, let's say it's definitely one of the most freaked out 80's films set in the Caribbean. I'm pretty sure I was permanently scarred by it's voodoo... anytime I see someone who looks like Bill Pullman I feel like I can't breathe. But as horrifying as it's depiction of Haiti was/is, laying on a resort's white sandy beach there today is actually more disturbing. You can see some of the most impoverished people in the world along the border fences, walled off from the corporate owned beaches. If you try to feed them or help them in any way, you risk being responsible for one of the native "guards" (tasked with preventing contact) losing his meager, family-supporting job. Inflatable "icebergs" and other plastic eyesores adorn the...
The Nutty Payne of Pregnant Senators 07/01/2009
News! They're making a Broadway show based upon "The Nutty Professor" No longer will the love of Jerry Lewis be held captive by the French. To the flavan-flavan! (Also, this should wash out the memory of Eddie Murphy's version, right?) There might be spin-off of "House Of Payne." Not sure this falls under "comedy" news. Then again, beauty - and funny - is in the eye of the beholder. I'm just not beholding Tyler Perry that well... Juxtapose This Cynopsis is a great source for daily industry news delivered to your email box. Today, I noticed two unrelated but cosmically linked postings: "TLC opens the network premiere of I Didn't Know I Was Pregnant on July 8 at 9p. The series, produced by Mike Mathis Productions, features stories about women who are completely unaware they were pregnant until they entered labor and delivery...." and "After airing only three episodes, MTV...

Hello, I must be going. 06/30/2009
On the one hand, it feels like I just got here. On the other, we've been through another Sundance, another Cannes - and now, here comes another summer, and I'll be heading out soon on holiday. I won't be returning to this particular spot, though you may see my byline appearing now and then elsewhere at IFC.com; the Daily, at least as we've known it and watched it evolve over the past six years, won't be returning, either. But that doesn't mean I'll stop doing what I do; I've been dreaming up a new format and, if all goes according...
What to Watch on IFC in July 07/02/2009
Every Monday and Wednesday this month, beginning at midnight, IFC is blending musical performances with indie film. Tune in for films inspired by rock n' roll, including "Last Days," directed by Gus Van Sant and loosely based on the death of Kurt Cobain. You can also catch "Festival Express," a rockumentary featuring amazing performances from some of the music industry's most influential names, including Janis Joplin and the Grateful Dead. Also on the ticket, the Beatles classic "A Hard Day's Night," Australian import "Starstruck" and "Wild Man Blues," a doc about Woody Allen and his love for jazz. If you've...
