Ways to object to "Precious." 11/06/2009

For anyone familiar with habitual barnburner Armond White and his politics, it's zero surprise that the NY Press critic objects strenuously to "Precious." His review of the film has, as usual, much food for the comment trolls, particularly in his insistence that, by attaching their names and confessing personal histories of abuse, Tyler Perry and Oprah Winfrey are converting "their private agendas into heavily hyped social preoccupation," which I guess means... child abuse is really just another way for a couple of whiny celebrities to beg for attention? He also compares "Precious" to "The Birth of a Nation" and does...

"You're So Vain," Carly Simon finally reveals who! 11/06/2009

Sort of. One of the greatest mystery's in American music has been the identity of the man in the hit song "You're So Vain" since it's debut in 1972. Who is Carly singing about? People have speculated on which celebrity ex-boyfriend it is for decades. Mick Jagger, Cat Stevens, Kris Kristofferson? Warren Beatty always got my vote. Well on November 4th Carly went into the WNYC Soundcheck studio and told host John Schaefer that the name was embedded in her new recording of the song... backwards. It's like the good old Beatles LP days! Of course, Schaefer and his crew went and unmasked the mystery man, probably by means more sophisticated but less fun then playing an LP backwards. And the name is....drum roll.... David. Not Mick, or Warren. So David who? She only says the first name. David Bowie? David Letterman? I was not alive in 1972 so I...

Milwaukee Ha Ha? 11/04/2009

No, really. I am in Milwaukee for a couple days. Performing at Marquette and UW Oshkosh. I got to thinking... Besides Laverne & Shirley, most seasons of the Brewers (especially the Red Necks and Jeffrey Leonard years), and the accents, what's so funny about Milwaukee? This site gives me some comedy around. There are a couple clubs, some improv, some sketch groups... but is there anything amazing here? Who's "come out of" Milwaukee? This type of town has got to produce some under-the-radar gems, so who are they? And, furthermore, let's maybe start a little breakdown of comedy cities in the USA. In fact, this Milwaukee trip has just inspired me to do so. I'm gonna give it an off-the-cuff stab below, but I want to create a good list of comedy cities, with stuff like history and opportunity and industry and support, etc. etc. etc. So, when you're done...

Hello, I must be going. 06/30/2009

On the one hand, it feels like I just got here. On the other, we've been through another Sundance, another Cannes - and now, here comes another summer, and I'll be heading out soon on holiday. I won't be returning to this particular spot, though you may see my byline appearing now and then elsewhere at IFC.com; the Daily, at least as we've known it and watched it evolve over the past six years, won't be returning, either. But that doesn't mean I'll stop doing what I do; I've been dreaming up a new format and, if all goes according...

What to Watch on IFC in November 11/06/2009

Premiering November 24th on IFC, join master chef Sam Mason on "Dinner With The Band" as he invites his favorite touring bands to a Brooklyn loft for an intimate evening of cooking, conversation, and live performance. Part rocker, part chef, Mason creates "intellectual food" that stimulates the palate as well as the dialogue. "Dinner With The Band" begins airing Tuesday, 11/24 @ 11pm E/10pm C in the Automat. This Thanksgiving Day, IFC will be running an all day marathon of films that celebrate food, family, excessive behavior and outrageous comedy. The fun starts at 7:30 am with "The Castle" and...
