Rocky is the story of a bruised boxer triumphing over everything up to and including the concept of international Communism. Over the course of seven movies, Rocky has made us laugh as well as cry. Take a look at some funny Rocky moments that happened between the knockouts and epic training montages.

1. Rocky’s Nose Job

It takes a tough man to laugh at himself, but nobody’s tougher than Rocky. He could host an entire comedy roast on his own face — which would still be less damaging than the pasting he took in his fight against Apollo Creed.

2. License to Mock

truck

The hits keep coming directly into Rocky’s face. But, in fairness, that’s exactly what Rocky’s face is for. It’s taken more incoming enemy strikes than the Death Star.

3. Condominiums?

A wealthy Rocky is approached by investment advisers, but doesn’t quite comprehend what the man’s suggesting.

4. A Man of Simple Desires

Apollo Creed’s quest to force a revenge rematch at all costs in Rocky II backfires before the boxing even begins. The heavyweight champion of the world proclaims that the match will take place in Rocky’s hometown to really rub his nose in defeat. Rocky’s genuinely happy to be saved a trip, and in the process looks far cooler than the flustered champion.

5. Rocky Ain’t Chicken

Expert coach Mickey makes Rocky work for a living with some unconventional training methods. None of which was more amusing than the chicken-chasing sequences. The scene is so memorable, Creed called it back to amusing effect.

6. Paulie’s Robot Girlfriend

It’s a testament to Rocky IV that the birthday robot that Rocky gives to Paulie isn’t even the craziest thing that happens in the movie. Especially when you find out that Paulie reprogramed it to be female. (Fun fact: Stallone included the robot in the film after it was used to help treat his son’s autism.)

7. Paulie’s Snow Fail

Paulie has always been the comic relief of the Rocky franchise, and by the time Rocky IV rolled around he was approaching cartoonish sidekick status. The sheer majesty of his fall while trying to walk down a straight path in an empty landscape is sublime.

8. An Obvious Mismatch

ladder

Rocky was the only one to spot the serious discrepancies between a retired Apollo Creed and what appeared to be a Soviet Terminator.

9. Strong But Silent

Rocky IV tongue

Apollo lands his only real blow of the fight in the pre-match conference. Apollo Creed, a joker till the end.

10. Rockypollo Bromance

Apollo Creed spent Rocky III helping his rival learn everything about his personal style and success. The memorable training montage compressed an impossible amount of training into a few minutes, but the most-loved, most-shown, and most-mocked scene has to be the beach jog that turns into a manly embrace. It looks like Apollo has just proposed rather than trained Rocky to battle Clubber Lang.

Inauguration Alternative

Bill Murray On Repeat

Democrats, Republicans and Millennials agree: 2017 is shaping up to be a spectacle — a spectacle that really kicks into high gear this Friday with the presidential inauguration. Not only will the new POTUS swear in, but all the Country’s highest offices will be filled. It’s a daunting prospect, and to feel a little anxious about it is only normal. But if your anxiety is snowballing into panic, we have a solution:
Bill Murray.

He’s the human embodiment of a mental “Happy Place”, and there’s really no problem he can’t solve. So, with that in mind, how about we all set aside reality for a moment and let Bill take the pain away by imagining a top-shelf White House cabinet filled exclusively by his signature characters. Here are a few hypothetical appointments for your consideration…

Secretary of Defense:
Bill Murray from Stripes

His incompetence is balanced by charm, and dumb luck is inexplicably on his side. America could do worse.

Secretary of State:
Bill Murray from Lost In Translation

A seasoned globetrotter steeped in regional traditions who has the respect of the whole wide world. And he kills Costello in karaoke, which is very important.

Press Secretary:
Bill Murray from Ghostbusters

“Cats and dogs, living together. Mass hysteria.” Dude knows how to brief a room.

Secretary of Health and Human Services:
Bill Murray from What About Bob.

A doctor-approved people person who knows that progress is measured in baby steps.

Secretary of Energy:
Bill Murray from Groundhog Day

Let’s be honest, this world is going to need a lot of do-overs.

Feeling better? Hold on to that bliss. And enjoy a healthy alternative to the inauguration brouhaha with multiple Murrays all Friday long in an IFC movie marathon including Kingpin, Zombieland, Ghostbusters, and Ghostbusters II.

Hank Azaria Gets Thrown A Curve Ball

Unless you’ve somehow missed every episode of the Simpsons since 1989, then surely you know that Hank Azaria is one of the most important character actors of our time. He’s so prolific and his voice is so dynamic that he’s responsible for more iconic personalities than most folks realize. Basically, he’s the great and powerful Oz — except that when you pull back the curtain the truth is actually more impressive. And now Hank is coming to IFC to bring yet another character to the TV pop culture hive mind in the new series Brockmire. Check out the trailer below.

Based on the following Funny or Die short and co-starring Amanda Peet, Brockmire follows the story of imploded major league sportscaster Jim Brockmire as he tries to resurrect his career by calling plays for a floundering minor league team in a podunk town.

The series is written by Joel Church-Cooper (Undateable) and produced by Funny or Die’s Mike Farah and Joe Farrell, meaning that there’s funny in front of the camera, funny behind the camera–funny all around. Sounds like a ball to us.

Brockmire premieres April 5 at 10P on IFC.
